Health and Fitness ? Carpal Tunnel Syndrome ? Causes, Symptoms ...

What is carpal tunnel syndrome? It is a disease of the hand of which the features include numbness, tingling, pain and weakness. The usual parts affected by this syndrome are the thumb, index and middle fingers. The onset is frequently experienced during nighttime. When pressure in carpal tunnel is higher and the median nerve is irritated, carpal tunnel syndrome can develop. Median nerve is a nerve that travels down the arm and enters the hand through the carpal tunnel, which is found in the central part of the wrist.

Muscle imbalance is the most common cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. This imbalance is caused by the overuse of hand and forearm. The syndrome can also be caused by direct trauma, diabetes, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and other systemic disorders. As you may have noticed, the aforementioned ailments-causes are also characterized by muscular pain and the like. Repetitive wrist and finger flexion contributes to the onset of the disease and the flare-ups of symptoms. In fact, the determination of causes of the disease is difficult due to work conditions or underlying medical conditions. Other main causes include obesity, diabetes, hypothyroidism and arthritis. In several cases of this syndrome, the cause cannot be discovered.

Symptoms associated with this syndrome persist over time. Initially, the sufferer feels pain in the wrist and palm side of the hand. Both hands experience the symptoms. On the palm side of the index, middle and ring fingers, the sufferer also complains numbness, tingling, burning and other symptoms. In usual cases, the fifth finger is not affected by the syndrome as far as symptoms are concerned. The sensations mentioned above may spread to the forearm or shoulder. Since numbness can be felt in hands, the sufferer or patient may not be able to distinguish hot from cold objects using the sense of touch. The patient typically becomes feeble or weak and grasping objects can be quite difficult for him. The syndrome is also characterized by a feeling of having swollen hands when in fact, there is no visible swelling. This symptom may be an indicator of a more severe carpal tunnel disorder.

The disease is not actually incurable. Home care for it can even relieve mild cases of it. One basic and effective treatment is a wrist splint. It is worn to neutralize the position of the wrist while in use. Where can I buy this device? This may be the first question that comes to your mind. Wrist splint can be procured from most drugstores. This treatment lasts for four to six weeks. This splint can either be worn only during night time or both during night time and daytime. It largely depends on the severity of symptoms. In the event that the sufferer does not see any effects or results, wearing splints is obviously not ideal for his condition because it does not effectively work. If the sufferer wants a speedy treatment, acupuncture is the right treatment for him. A variety of medicinal herbs can be used between acupuncture sessions to achieve best results.
