Amazon says Kindle Fire sold a bunch, but won't say how many

Amazon Kindle Fire

Amazon's Kindle Fire was expected to be a success because of the Amazon brand name and $199 price point, but the tablet has continued to outsell predictions and is now the best selling item on Amazon for the eighth straight week. Black Friday saw enormous interest in not only the Fire, but the entire Kindle family, Amazon said, though it didn't actually release any numbers to back that up.

Aruba to free suspect in Md. woman's death

A judge in Aruba on Friday ordered the release of U.S. businessman Gary Giordano, who was detained in connection with the August death of his traveling companion.

The judge said Giordano, a 50-year-old employment agency owner from Gaithersburg, Maryland,? must be freed on Tuesday without any conditions.

He has been in jail since Aug. 5 while investigators sought more time to gather and evaluate evidence in the death of 35-year-old Robyn Gardner, of Frederick, Maryland.

NBC News' Jeff Rossen reported Friday that prosecutors planned to appeal the decision.

Aruban Solicitor General Taco Stein said he did not know when the date for the appeal would be set, but prosecutors asked for a date before Tuesday, NBC Washington reported.

"If you file a charge then you have to write the suspicions you have, and that means you have to be clear about what exactly has happened," Stein told NBC Washington.

"As long as we don't have the body or we don't have trace evidence or we don't have the material to bring us to a conclusion on that, it's very difficult to make a charge, because the only thing at this point in time you can say is she went missing on the second of August and we presume she's dead but we don't have evidence to that effect," he added.

"We feel that a crime has been committed," Stein said. "We still see Mr. Giordano as the main suspect in that."

Stein added that Giordano could be extradited back to Aruba if prosecutors felt they had enough evidence to go to court.

Giordano has said that Gardner was swept out to sea on Aug. 2 while snorkeling. Her body has not been found.

Investigators developed Giordano as a suspect because he tried to cash in on a travel insurance policy he took out on Gardner and there were inconsistencies in his story, authorities have said.

Giordano was initially detained Aug. 5 at the airport before he could leave the island and his detention has been extended several times since then.

"It's our intention and our determination to continue this investigation and to see to it to bring about the truth, not only for the island but especially for the relatives of Robyn, especially this time of year with the holidays coming up," Stein told NBC Washington. "It must be very hard on them that this situation still exists."

Retirement Information Regarding Life Insurance Coverage ...

Perhaps you have reached retirement, have no dependents, and now feel life insurance coverage is unneeded for you. You may be right. But if, later, you?ve gathered debts and want them covered once you die, you might choose to do it with life insurance ? or an alternative. Here?s some retirement information regarding various choices with life insurance coverage.

Retirement information regarding utilizing an existing life insurance coverage
If you have a life insurance policy and feel you may need it to handle outstanding debts at your death (e.g. home loan, credit cards, etc), then maintain it. Another reason to keep life insurance coverage in retirement would be to equalize your estate. Say you?re leaving a resource that is hard to separate, your house, to once son. You can leave the life insurance reward to the other son.

Retirement information on getting a new life insurance policy
Should you worry about qualifying for brand new life insurance coverage to fulfil you?re demand?
Yes, if you would like a policy more than say $50,000 of death benefit. In such a case, your health wll determine eligibility. Wellness is not a concern for a small policy. You?ve seen these late nigh Television advertisements from AARP and Colonial Life on buying a $50,000 policy regardless of health. The will cost you a lot but they will sell a policy to anyone.

Retirement information regarding life insurance policy options
Loaning institutions have discovered it lucrative to provide insurance coverage to deal with debt you have with them. Credit card corporations and banks provide insurance deductibles on your outstanding balances. This?ll probably cost you a few bucks each month. And when you die, this debt-based insurance coverage will pay that particular financial debt entirely. Sometimes they are doing this for automobile loans.

So if this kind of debt-based insurance is a better alternative than spending for a regular lifestyle insurance policy to cover your financial debt, go for it. And if so, and also you nonetheless have additional use for a normal life insurance coverage, be sure to subtract off the financial debt covered by your debt-based insurance from your forecasted death benefit needs for the regular life insurance coverage.

Observe that any policy problems where wellness isn?t an issue for your insurance provider usually charges much more. Your least costs insurance policies always come from insurance providers who need taking a look at your health background and occasionally a health insurance exam.

Retirement information: disclosures about life insurance
The purchase of life insurance entails costs, fees, expenses and possible surrender charges and depends on the health of the candidate. Not every candidates are insurable (excluding for instances exactly where the insurance firm offers a no-health review policy). If a coverage is organized as a modified endowment agreement, withdrawals will be subject to tax as ordinary revenue and withdrawals prior to age 59 ? are subject to a 10% penalty.

Retirement information regarding liquidating an active life coverage
In case you have a policy in retirement and no longer need it as you do not have debts or estate equalization concerns as explained above, then you can either surrender it to the insurance organization or sell it to a third party. Just consult your insurance adviser about both alternatives and also to get you the quotations.

They call it 'guppy love': Biologists solve an evolution mystery

Thursday, November 24, 2011

Guppies in the wild have evolved over at least half-a-million years ? long enough for the males' coloration to have changed dramatically. Yet a characteristic orange patch on male guppies has remained remarkably stable, though it could have become redder or more yellow. Why has it stayed the same hue of orange over such a long period of time?

Because that's the color female guppies prefer.

"Sometimes populations have to evolve just to stay the same," said Greg Grether, a UCLA professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and co-author of a study published Nov. 23 in the online edition of the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, a major journal for research in evolutionary biology.

"In this case, the males have evolved back over and over again to the color that females prefer," said Grether, who noted that there are many examples in which there is less variation among populations of a species than life scientists would expect.

The new study, funded by the National Science Foundation, "provides a neat solution to a mystery that has puzzled me for years," he said.

The orange patches on male guppies are made up of two pigments: carotenoids (which they ingest in their diets and are yellow) and drosopterins (which are red and which their bodies produce). Carotenoids are the same pigments that provide color to vegetables and fruits. Plants produce carotenoids, but animals generally cannot; guppies obtain most of their carotenoids from algae.

UCLA's Kerry Deere, the lead author of the study, conducted experiments in which she presented female guppies (Poecilia reticulata) with a choice of males with low, medium and high levels of drosopterin to see which males they preferred. In her experiments, the females were given a wider range of pigment choices than they would find in the wild. Deere, who was a graduate student of ecology and evolutionary biology in Grether's laboratory at the time and is currently a UCLA postdoctoral scholar in human genetics, conducted more than 100 mate-choice trials.

The females strongly preferred the intermediate males, those whose patches, or spots, were the right hue of orange ? not too red and not too yellow.

"The females preferred the males with an intermediate drosopterin level by a highly significant margin," Deere said.

"Males that are closer to this preferred hue probably have more offspring," Grether said.

If guppies were dependent only on carotenoids for their orange coloration, one would expect to find large changes in the color of their orange patches because the availability of algae varies by location. Guppies are native to Trinidad and Venezuela; the ones in this study were from Trinidad.

(Unlike the colorful guppies sold in pet stores, female guppies in the wild do not have bright coloration like the orange patches. Males are not as ornate, or as large, as the pet-store variety either.)

"A pattern I discovered 10 years ago, which was mysterious at first, is that in locations where more carotenoids are available in their diet, guppies produce more of the drosopterins," Grether said. "There is a very strong pattern of the ratio of these two kinds of pigments staying about the same.

"To human eyes at least, as the proportion of carotenoids in the spots goes up, the spots look yellower, and as the proportion of drosopterins goes up, the spots look redder. By maintaining a very similar ratio of the two pigments across sites, the fish maintain a similar hue of orange from site to site. What is maintaining the similar pigment ratio across sites and across populations? The reason for the lack of variation is that genetic changes counteract environmental changes. The males have evolved differences in drosopterin production that keep the hue relatively constant across environments. As a result of Kerry's experiment, we now have good evidence that female mate choice is responsible for this pattern."

While there are many cases in nature in which genetic variation in a trait masks environmental variation, there are very few examples where the cause is known.

"I originally assumed if there was variation among populations in drosopterin production, it would be the populations where carotenoid availability was lowest that were producing more of these synthetic pigments to compensate for the lack of carotenoids in their diet. But we found the opposite pattern," Grether said. "They're not using drosopterins as a carotenoid substitute; they're matching carotenoid levels with drosopterins. Why they are doing that was a mystery. The answer appears to be that it enables them to maintain the hue that female guppies prefer."

Arab League prepares for Syria sanctions (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Arab officials will prepare plans for sanctions against Syria on Saturday over its failure to let Arab League monitors oversee an initiative aimed at ending a violent crackdown on protesters seeking an end to President Bashar al-Assad's rule.

Damascus missed a Friday deadline to sign an agreement under which the Arab League planned to send observers to Syria, where the United Nations says 3,500 people have been killed since the start of the uprising in March.

Despite Syria's pledge this month to withdraw its army from urban areas and let in the monitors, the violence has continued, prompting reprisals from the Arab League, stinging rebukes from Turkey and French proposals for humanitarian intervention.

Damascus, where the Assad family has ruled for 41 years, says regional powers helped incite the violence, which it blames on armed groups targeting civilians and its security forces.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday at least 30 people were killed the day before including 13 members of Assad's security forces, most of them killed in a clash with army deserters in the eastern Deir al-Zor province.

Activists said government forces shot dead at least four demonstrators in Damascus on Friday who were appealing for foreign intervention to stop the crackdown. Two other civilians were killed in raids on their homes, they said.

Arab ministers had warned that unless Syria agreed to let monitors in, they could consider imposing sanctions including suspending flights to Syria, stopping dealings with the central bank, freezing Syrian government bank accounts and halting financial dealings.

They could also decide to stop commercial trade with the Syrian government "with the exception of strategic commodities so as not to impact the Syrian people," the ministers said.

The League's economic and social council, which can comprise officials or ministers, will meet on Saturday to prepare recommendations for a meeting of foreign ministers the next day.

Syria's economy is already reeling from months of unrest, aggravated by U.S. and European sanctions on oil exports and several state businesses.

"NO MORE TOLERANCE"

In neighboring Turkey, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said his country could take steps alongside the Arab League if Syria did not respond to the proposal for observers positively.

"I want to say clearly we have no more tolerance for the bloodshed in Syria," he said.

The stepped-up pressure followed a French proposal for "humanitarian corridors" to be set up through which food and medicine could be shipped to alleviate civilian suffering.

The French plan could link Syrian civilian centers to the frontiers of Turkey and Lebanon, to the Mediterranean coast or to an airport, and enable supply of humanitarian supplies or medicines to people in need.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said the plan fell short of a military intervention but acknowledged that humanitarian convoys might need armed protection.

Foreign powers are seeking to persuade Damascus to accept such a scheme, diplomats say.

"So far they haven't said no, so we may be able to convince them," said a Western diplomatic source. "As long as we are in the humanitarian dimension it is harder for countries like Syria to refuse to allow aid to civilians."

Without Syrian agreement, the only way humanitarian corridors could work is if they were backed by force, ideally supported by a U.N. resolution.

Some measure of comfort for Assad has come from longtime ally Russia, China and some other countries that have voiced opposition to sanctions and warned against a foreign military intervention.

"At the current stage, what is needed is not resolutions, not sanctions, not pressure, but internal Syrian dialogue," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

Lukashevich said Russia supported the Arab League's call for a halt to the violence but that "radical opposition" groups with foreign support shared the blame. Outside military intervention was "absolutely unacceptable," he said.

After a meeting in Moscow on Thursday, diplomats from Russia, China and the other three emerging-market BRICS countries - Brazil, India and South Africa - also warned against foreign intervention without U.N. backing.

PILOTS KILLED

Alongside the mainly peaceful protests, armed insurgents have increasingly attacked military targets in recent weeks. Officials say 1,100 members of the security forces have been killed since the outbreak of uprising.

State news agency SANA reported funerals of 22 security force members on Saturday, including six pilots killed in an attack on an air force base between Homs and Palmyra two days earlier which the army says was carried out by an "armed terrorist group."

"This confirms the involvement of foreign elements and their support of these terrorist operations in an effort to weaken the fighting capabilities of our forces," the army said on Friday.

The account fits the government narrative that it faces an armed insurrection by trouble-makers backed by its enemies, rather than a largely peaceful pro-democracy movement inspired by the Arab Spring revolts which toppled the rulers of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya and may have forced out Yemen's president.

State television showed footage of thousands of people demonstrating in the Mediterranean city of Latakia on Saturday, condemning the Arab League for taking a stance against Syria and chanting in support of Assad.

IPCom to enforce injunction against HTC, ban sales of its 3G devices in Germany

HTC's had a rough go of it in the legal arena this year, and the company just got hit with another judicial setback in Germany. Patent holding firm (read: patent troll) IPCom was granted an injunction in 2009 against HTC based upon HTC's devices alleged infringement of an IPCom patent on UMTS 3G technology. HTC appealed that injunction in 2009 to suspend its enforcement, and today the German court upheld the previous decision. With the injunction back in full effect, IPCom plans to seek sanctions against the Taiwanese firm and ban the sale of its devices in Deutschland. So, that means HTC will have to pony up the cash to license the IP in question or leave lots of Beats fanatics disappointed come Christmas morning.

Is Samsung giving up on netbooks next year?

An email sent by Samsung to its trading partners appears to shut down any prospect of the manufacturer producing new netbooks after the first quarter of 2012. The email is quoted by French site Blogeee and says that Samsung will switch its focus to 11.6- and 12-inch ultraportables as well as Intel Ultrabooks. The quote does not preclude some of those ultraportables running cheaper processors such as Cedar Trail, which would arguably just make them slightly larger next-gen netbooks, but it does specifically mention the abandonment of the 10.1-inch form factor. Here's our translation:
"Following the introduction of our new strategy in 2012, we will discontinue our 10.1-inch (netbook) product range in Q1 2012, in favor of ultraportables (11.6 and 12 inches) and ultrabooks to be launched in 2012."
[Thanks, Marco]

Kim Kardashian's marriage causes Christmas card snafu (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? With more than a month before Christmas, Kim Kardashian's impending divorce is already casting a pall over the reality TV star's holiday season.

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" personality took a bath on an expensive Christmas card order, because the cards featured a picture of her and estranged husband Kris Humphries on their wedding day Radar Online reports.

To quote another cherished television icon, "D'oh!"

A Kardashian insider tells Radar that Kim ordered the cards shortly before departing for her honeymoon, contacting a posh stationery store with precise -- and pricey -- instructions.

"Kim is a planner, and is obsessed with details, and a total control freak. She wanted her Christmas cards to be perfect, and she wanted at least 10 different choices of holiday cards, black and white, matted finish, you name it, Kim thought of it," the individual says.

"The proofs were delivered to Kim in mid-September, and she conveyed to the owners of the company that she was very pleased with the results. Kim said she would get back to them with a final choice, but alas, she never did, for obvious reasons."

Kardashian filed for divorce from Humphries on October 31, after just 72 days of marriage -- which was surprising, but perhaps slightly less shocking than the fact that someone associated with her uses the word "alas."

At any rate, Kardashian appears to have already remedied the situation. The reality TV queen tweeted on Monday that she and her brood were sitting for a replacement portrait.

"Shooting our family Christmas card today. u guys will love our theme this year," Kardashian wrote.

Presumably, the theme won't revolve around the sanctity of marriage.

Bummer that Kim had to double-spend on the wedding this year. Then again, with the windfall that she reportedly raked in for the wedding in the first place, she's still most likely coming out better than even on the whole deal.

Debt panel's demise sets up partisan wrangling

Debt supercommittee co-chair Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., speaks outside her office on Capitol Hill as the work of the debt reduction panel ends in failure, in Washington, Monday, Nov. 21, 2011. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

Chart shows broad categories of cuts under budget sequester

(AP) ? The failure of a special deficit-reduction supercommittee sets up a year-end battle between President Barack Obama and a dysfunctional Congress over renewing a payroll tax cut and jobless benefits for millions.

At the same time, the debt panel's failure means deep, automatic cuts to the Pentagon budget, beginning in 2013, that defense hawks already are dedicated to unwinding.

The panel's failure to reach agreement on how to cut deficits by $1.2 trillion or more over 10 years was not unexpected but grew out of intractable divisions over spending and taxes that promise to hound lawmakers through 2012 elections that could sort it all out.

Stock prices plummeted at home and across debt-scarred Europe on Monday as the panel ended its brief, secretive existence without an agreement. Republicans and Democrats alike pointed fingers, maneuvering for political advantage in advance of elections less than a year away.

Lawmakers of both parties agreed action in Congress was still required, somehow and soon.

"Despite our inability to bridge the committee's significant differences, we end this process united in our belief that the nation's fiscal crisis must be addressed and that we cannot leave it for the next generation to solve," the panel's two co-chairs, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, said in a somber statement.

President Barack Obama, who was criticized by Republicans for keeping the committee at arm's length, said refusal by the GOP to raise taxes on the wealthy was the main stumbling block to a deal.

Obama pledged to veto any attempt by lawmakers to repeal a requirement for $1 trillion in automatic spending cuts that are to be triggered by the supercommittee's failure to reach a compromise, unless Congress approves an alternative approach.

"I will veto any effort to get rid of those automatic spending cuts to domestic and defense spending. There will be no easy off-ramps on this one," Obama said.

The panel's failure left lawmakers confronting a large and controversial agenda for December, including Obama's call to extend an expiring payroll tax cut enacted last year to prop up the economy, as well as unemployment benefits averaging about $300 a week for the long-term jobless.

Neither item is an easy lift, especially given the hard feelings ? and presidential politics ? consuming Washington.

Democrats had wanted to add those items and more to any compromise, and lawmakers in both parties also face a struggle to stave off a threatened 27 percent cut in payments to doctors who treat Medicare patients.

Based on accounts provided by officials familiar with the talks, it appeared that weeks of private negotiations had done nothing to alter a fundamental divide between the two political parties.

Before and during the talks, Democrats said they would agree to significant savings from benefit programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security only if Republicans would agree to a hefty dose of higher taxes, including cancellation of Bush-era cuts at upper-income brackets.

In contrast, the GOP side said spending, not revenue, was the cause of the government's chronic budget deficits, and insisted that the tax cuts approved in the previous decade all be made permanent.

The panel's failure marked the end of a yearlong effort by divided government to grapple with budget deficits that lawmakers of both parties and economists of all persuasions agreed were unsustainable.

Negotiations this spring and summer led by Vice President Joseph Biden were followed by an extraordinary round of White House talks in which Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, sought a sweeping compromise to cut trillions from future deficits. They outlined a potential accord that would make far-reaching changes in Medicare and other programs, while generating up to $800 billion in higher revenue through an overhaul of the tax code. But in the end, they failed to agree.

Justin Bieber And Boyz II Men Unwrap 'Fa La La' Video

Black-and-white video showcases Bieber's heartfelt singing with his idols.

Christmas is right around the corner, but the Biebs is already in the holiday spirit. On Wednesday (November 23), Justin Bieber dropped the video for "Fa La La" with Boyz II Men. There are no reindeer or presents under the tree; instead, Justin and the Philadelphia R&B outfit sing of a warm love that will endure through the holiday season.

The black-and-white clip begins in an empty loft, where Bieber sings alone, with his arms flailing and face slightly scrunching every time he hits those heartfelt notes. Justin's solo intro leads way to a collaborative bridge, where Boyz II Men join in. "Baby you de-serve eve-ry-thing you want/ It's your night," they all sing in harmony as the "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye" vocalists join the teenage star in song on the front porch of a brick house.

No elaborate set needed. With an empty city as their backdrop, the four crooners throw down in an old-fashioned sing-off. As the track builds, BIIM's Wanya Morris really gets into it, pounding his chest and kicking one leg up to accentuate his performance. Bieber, who is dressed in a white tee and slim-cut leather jacket, tugs on his collar to let you just how much his words mean to him.

On November 1, Bieber teased the clip when he tweeted, "Killed it with @BoyzIImen on DWTS and then just shot a video for our song #FALALA with @colintilley - great night! living a dream. Thanku," in reference to his appearance on "Dancing With The Stars" and the Colin Tilley-directed "Fa La La" video.

Maybe some of Boyz II Men's subject matter was a bit mature for the pint-size Bieber, but they influenced him nonetheless. "He told us his mom didn't want him to sing 'I'll Make Love to You,' so he'd sneak and go sing it somewhere," Wanya Morris told MTV News. "It's also good to know we've influenced such a good artist. It's something that makes us feel we've accomplished [something and] we're doing our job, [that] a guy so young and so into his craft [is] influenced by three guys from Philadelphia that love to sing."

Yes, "Fa La La" is the latest single from JB's holiday LP, Under the Mistletoe, but Tilley and company didn't overload the video with Christmas themes as to so implicitly tie it to December 25 -- after all, true love should last all year 'round.

What do you think of the video? Let us know in the comments!

Florida officials probe hazing after drum major's death (Reuters)

ORLANDO/TALLAHASSEE, Fla (Reuters) ? Hazing may have been a factor in the death of a Florida college drum major following a popular football and marching band competition between two of the state's historically black universities, authorities said on Tuesday.

Drum major Robert Champion, 26, died Saturday night after helping conduct the world-famous Florida A&M University's Marching "100" band during its halftime performance at the Florida Classic in Orlando. The school competes every year before a typically sold-out crowd against Bethune-Cookman University of Daytona Beach.

Witnesses said Champion, a music major from Atlanta who served as one of six drum majors for the 375-member Marching "100" band, vomited and complained that he could not breathe in a band bus in the parking lot of an Orlando hotel after the game. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"The investigation indicates that 'hazing' was involved in the events that occurred prior to the 911 call for assistance," Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said in a statement.

Earlier on Tuesday, FAMU President James Ammons said in Tallahassee that the school would indefinitely suspend all activities of the marching band and would appoint a task force "to determine if there are any unauthorized and questionable activities associated with the culture of the Marching '100.'"

"We don't have all the facts at this time, but we are going to get them," Ammons said. "Our first priority at Florida A&M University is to protect the safety, health and well being of our students, faculty and staff members."

The Marching "100" is renowned for its high-stepping, high-energy dance routines. The band was invited to perform at both of former U.S. President Bill Clinton's inaugural parades, and in Paris in 1989 at France's Bastille Day Parade to celebrate the bicentennial of the French Revolution.

Both the prestigious band and the university have faced hazing allegations in the past.

In 2001, a former FAMU marching band member won a $1.8 million verdict in a civil battery suit against five band members for a hazing incident in which he was beaten so badly his kidneys shut down. The student also settled out of court with FAMU for an undisclosed sum.

In 2005, Florida lawmakers bolstered penalties for hazing that resulted in great bodily injury or death. A year later, five Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity members at FAMU were charged under the new law for a hazing incident that left the victim needing surgery after being caned more than 90 times.

Two of the fraternity members were convicted and sentenced to two-year prison terms.

In the latest case involving the drum major, Orange County Sheriff's Captain Angelo Nieves said further tests will be needed after the medical examiner's autopsy of Champion on Monday was inconclusive as to the exact cause of death.

Nieves said the sheriff's office was investigating both the death and hazing, and was conducting interviews at the FAMU campus in Tallahassee.

"In the next few days or weeks, it will become clearer as to whether any criminal charges will be forthcoming," Sheriff Demings said. "Our goal is to ensure that a complete investigation is done and that justice will prevail."

Egypt stock market drops on political unrest (AP)

CAIRO ? Egypt's benchmark stock index extended its decline for a second consecutive day and airport officials reported a sharp drop Monday in international passenger arrivals as deadly clashes in the capital cast fresh doubts about the country's political stability days before pivotal parliamentary elections.

The Egyptian Exchange's EGX30 index closed 3.99 percent weaker, at 3,862 points, according to the exchange's Web site. The drop surpassed the previous day's 2.4 percent decline sparked by clashes between security forces and protesters in Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square, and pushed the index's year-to-date losses to almost 46 percent.

The protesters are demanding that the ruling military council announce a date for transition to a civilian government. At least 26 people have been killed in the clashes since Saturday across Egypt, the overwhelming majority in Cairo, according to a morgue official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian pound flirted near the 6 pounds to the U.S. dollar mark, reaching levels largely unseen since the height of the Jan. 25 uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak. The pound, which had hit about 5.99 pounds to the dollar, pulled back to around 5.973 pounds to the dollar later in the day. Also, Egypt's 5-year credit default swaps, the cost of insuring the country's debt, stood at 525 basis points compared to 466 basis points on Nov. 18, according to data from financial information provider Markit.

The depreciation pressures, coupled with the soaring debt costs, underscored the country's economic crunch which has been exacerbated by a nearly 40 percent erosion in net international reserves since December.

"Egypt has a massive external financing risk over the next year, and these political events are making matters worse," said Said Hirsh, Mideast economist with Capital Economics in London. "Any kind of political uncertainty is making the situation worse."

The uprising that ousted Mubarak in mid-February sparked a tide of optimism in the country, with millions expecting that nearly three-decades of authoritarian rule best defined by a system of crony capitalism and outright nepotism would be replaced by a transparent, democratic system that offered them at least the opportunity to succeed.

But those expectations have proven far greater than the reality on the ground as mass protests battered the economy, with key foreign revenue sources tourism and foreign investment taking a beating since the start of the year.

Net international reserves were down to $22 billion by the end of October, from $36 billion by the end of last year, according to Central Bank of Egypt figures. At least some of that has gone to supporting the Egyptian currency.

The unrest comes days before parliamentary elections ? the first since Mubarak's ouster. The vote is seen as a milestone in Egypt's transition to a democratic system, but the violence has raised questions about whether the various parties will pull out.

Reflecting the impact of the unrest, airport officials in Cairo said at least two airlines canceled flights from Italy and Syria on Monday because of the unrest in the capital and that the number of arrivals from European nations plunged between 30 to 50 percent. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak with the media.

In addition, a work slowdown by roughly 500 employees at national carrier EgyptAir led to delays of up to three hour on eight of the airline's flights, the officials said.

The strike by maintenance workers and technicians was the latest in a series of labor actions that have rocked the country. In this case, the workers are demanding promotions, salary boosts and changes in some of the company's senior management.

The cancellations and the drop in arrivals was reminiscent of the mass departures of foreigners from Egypt in the first days of the uprising ? an exodus that heralded the start of the decline of the country's vital tourism sector for the year.

The IMF is projecting Egypt's economic growth to come in at an anemic 1.2 percent this year compared to about 5 percent in 2010.

With key revenue sources hammered the interim government has had to rely on foreign aid, as well as selling treasury bills and bonds to raise money. But yields on two billion, 266-day, treasury bills auctioned on Sunday surged to 14.7 percent ? significantly higher than the 1.5 percent interest rate the IMF had requested on a roughly $3 billion loan it offered the government over the summer.

Egyptian officials turned down that offer, but are now re-evaluating it given the climbing yields they are forced to pay to attract interest in their securities.

"The problem is that this is an interim government, and it's questionable how much power it has with the military council making the decision," said Hirsh. "There's basically no clear economic policy direction on the part of the interim government."

The decision to turn down the IMF loan and turn to T-bills to raise money at higher yields reflects "this sort of contradiction in policy," he said. "It's doesn't make any sense."

Pregnant Jessica Simpson Already Planning Post-Baby Weight Loss Endorsement Deal?

Since news broke that Eric Johnson got Jessica Simpson pregnant long before she went and confirmed it, she lost out on the whole tabloid exclusive deal.

But, since the pressure's on celebs to shed the baby weight they inevitably gain as soon as possible, she may have a backup plan up her sleeve to cash in.

If Us Weekly is to be believed, then Jessica is already planning for just that, and is in talks with Weight Watchers to be their newest celebr pound-shedder.

Once baby makes three, Jess will make four. Million. All she has to do is lose "a significant amount of weight" on the points-based plan, and shill for it.

While it would be a bit surprising, even in this day and age, for a star known for promoting body acceptance to be in negotiations to make her pregnant body the new face of weight loss, her camp is already shooting down the rumor.

So false! And order is once again restored to the universe.

"There is no Weight Watchers deal," a source told E! News, claiming that Simpson planned to sign on with the company to lose the weight she'd gained over the past few years, "But then she got pregnant" and there is currently no plan to do so.

Funny, the same has been said of her wedding to Eric.
