Politics Today - Facebook's Zuckerberg Now Building a Political Network

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is building a new social network, and this time it's political.

While he?s better known as the hoodie-clad, Harvard dropout that launched a multi-billion dollar Internet company, Zuckerberg has emerged as a political player on the national stage.

After largely sitting on the political sidelines for a few years, the 29-year-old Facebook founder is using his clout as a top business executive and American success story to advocate for comprehensive immigration reform.

This week, Zuckerberg will publicly dive headfirst into the immigration debate that?s captivated Washington by joining forces with pro-immigration advocates outside of the tech industry.

On Tuesday evening in San Francisco, Zuckerberg will give introductory remarks at the premiere of ?Documented,? a documentary film directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas that looks at the stories of young immigrants, known as "Dreamers," who came to the United States illegally as children with their parents.

FWD.us, the political advocacy group that Zuckerberg co-founded and helped finance with his former Harvard roommate Joe Green, is co-hosting the event with Vargas?s immigrant rights group Define American.

The premiere is expected to draw a who?s who crowd of top Silicon Valley tech stars, as well as undocumented workers and Dreamers. The diverse audience is intended to show a united push for immigration reform.

Green, president of FWD.us, will moderate a panel after the film screening that will feature Vargas, immigrant rights activist Gaby Pacheco, Groupon Founder Andrew Mason and FWD.us founder Ruchi Sanghvi, who was Facebook?s first female engineer and now serves as vice president of operations for Dropbox. The upcoming premiere is being viewed as a launch pad for the tech industry in the push to overhaul the country?s immigration rules.

?We?re thrilled that he?s engaged,? said Carl Guardino, chief executive of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, a tech trade association that counts Facebook as a member. ?I?m really hoping that the opportunity is used by Mark and others to galvanize more of our tech community brethren to deeply engage immediately on immigration reform legislation during this recess in Congress.?

The tech industry has spent years pushing Congress to raise the cap for high-skilled work visas and make more green cards available for foreign graduates with advanced technical degrees from American universities. But with the rare momentum behind immigration reform this year, tech lobbyists have expanded their legislative push beyond the high-skilled piece of the debate to advocate for a comprehensive solution to the country?s broken immigration system. FWD.us has been a leader in that fight.

But the young political advocacy group has run into some public relations headaches right out of the gate and been forced to deflect some negative press, much like Zuckerberg did in his early days in the public spotlight. The tales of Facebook?s transition from a project launched in Zuckerberg?s dorm room to a Silicon Valley darling inspired the 2010 Aaron Sorkin drama ?The Social Network,? which negatively depicted the young Facebook founder as a wildly talented, yet self-centered computer programmer.

FWD.us, which counts top Silicon Valley tech leaders as donors, sparked the ire of liberal groups after it aired a set of controversial political television ads that touted the conservative bona fides of Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Mark Begich (D-Alaska) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). The ads for Begich and Graham lauded their support of the Keystone XL pipeline, prompting environmental and progressive groups to temporarily boycott purchasing ads on Facebook.

FWD.us also lost a high-profile contributor, Tesla chief executive Elon Musk, after the ads aired. While comprehensive immigration reform is the first national policy issue that Zuckerberg has personally engaged in, he has previously been active in New Jersey politics.

Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla, hosted a campaign fundraiser for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) at his home in Palo Alto, Calif. in February, which drew a few dozen protestors to his neighborhood in the traditionally Democratic-leaning city, according to The San Jose Mercury News.

However, Zuckerberg, who has not declared support for any particular political party, also has plans to host a fundraiser for Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker?s (D) Senate run, Bloomberg reported. The Facebook chief executive appeared on ?The Oprah Winfrey Show? with Booker and Christie in 2010 after he pledged to donate a $100 million to Newark schools.

But he?s also recently been active at contributing to lawmakers at the federal level. Zuckerberg and his wife have each donated $5,000 to Facebook?s PAC, which has doled out more than $100,000 in campaign cash to members of Congress this year, including those who have played a role in the push for immigration reform, according to the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP). Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), a member of the Senate Gang of Eight, picked up $10,000 from the social network?s PAC, which gave $5,000 each to his campaign committee and leadership PAC, CRP reported.

Two other Gang of Eight members, Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) also received $5,000 each from Facebook?s PAC. It also wrote checks to members that will play key roles in the upcoming immigration fight in the House, including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), CRP said.

Before that, Zuckerberg gave $5,000 to the company?s PAC in 2012 and 2011. ?I think people who try to figure out his politics, I don't think they?re going to see an ideological-driven young man, but one that wants what?s best for the nation,? Guardino said.

Dying 2-year-old is Pa. couple's best man

JEANNETTE, Pa. (AP) ? Looking dapper in a tiny tan pinstripe suit and orange shirt, a 2-year-old boy with only weeks to live served as the best man Saturday afternoon for his parents' Pennsylvania wedding.

Christine Swidorsky carried Logan Stevenson on her shoulder at the Saturday afternoon wedding in Jeannette, a suburb of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

Logan stood with his grandmother, Debbie Stevenson, during a 12-minute ceremony uniting Logan's mother and his father, Sean Stevenson. The boy has leukemia and other complications.

"We're married," Swidorsky exclaimed joyously after kissing her groom to applause from family and friends.

After a whirlwind week, the Jeannette couple tied the knot in a hastily arranged backyard ceremony that formalized their union and celebrated Logan's life, which doctors say will be cut short soon by cancer.

The Stevensons abandoned an original wedding date of July 2014 after learning from doctors late last month that their son had two to three weeks to live. The couple wanted Logan to see them marry and to be part of family photos.

Logan, who was born Oct. 22, 2010, was diagnosed shortly after his first birthday with acute myeloid leukemia. He has Fanconi anemia, a rare disease that often leads to cancer.

He endured a stem cell transplant in July 2012. Last March, he underwent surgery to remove a kidney ravaged by a tumor.

During a Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World in June, Logan fell ill. He was hospitalized in Florida before he was flown back to Pittsburgh.

During a trip to the emergency room last month, a test revealed a mass in his remaining kidney, which led to his terminal prognosis. Logan is spending his remaining days at home, where he is showered with attention from family members.

Swidorsky's daughter, Isabella Johns, 13, served as bridesmaid and the couple's 1-year-old daughter, Savannah, was her parents' flower girl.

Oil exploration threatens Africa's billion dollar World Heritage Site

Africa?s oldest national park could be worth US$1.1 billion per year if developed sustainably, rather than being given over to potentially-damaging oil extraction, a report released by WWF today has found.

Virunga National Park has the potential to generate 45,000 permanent jobs through investments in hydropower, the fishery industry and ecotourism, according to analysis conducted by Dalberg Global Development Advisors, an independent consulting firm.

The Economic Value of Virunga National Park says exploitation of oil concessions, which have been allocated across 85 per cent of the World Heritage property, could bring pollution, cause instability and cost people their jobs.

?Virunga represents a valuable asset to Democratic Republic of the Congo and contributes to Africa?s heritage as the oldest and most biodiverse park on the continent,? the report says. ?Plans to explore for oil and exploit oil reserves put Virunga?s value at risk.?

In June, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee called for the cancelation of all Virunga oil permits and appealed to concession holders Total SA and Soco International PLC not to undertake exploration in World Heritage Sites. Total has committed to respecting Virunga?s current boundary, leaving UK-based Soco as the only oil company with plans to explore inside the park.

?Virunga?s rich natural resources are for the benefit of the Congolese people, not for foreign oil prospectors to drain away,? said Raymond Lumbuenamo, Country Director for WWF-Democratic Republic of the Congo. ?Our country?s future depends on sustainable economic development, and the livelihoods of over 50,000 people depend on this park. Oil extraction here could have devastating consequences for local communities that rely on Virunga for fish, drinking water and their other needs.?

Oil spills, pipeline leaks and gas flaring could contaminate the air, water and soil in the area with toxins, according to the report. It says studies of other oil producing regions have found that oil can cause health problems and fuel conflict.

Environmental impacts from oil extraction could threaten Virunga?s freshwater ecosystems, rich forests and rare wildlife, the study found. The park is home to over 3,000 different kinds of animals, including critically endangered mountain gorillas.

?This is where we draw the line. Oil companies are standing on the doorstep of one of the world?s most precious and fragile places, but we will not rest until Virunga is safe from this potential environmental disaster,? said Lasse Gustavsson, Executive Director of WWF International. ?Virunga has snow fields and lava fields, but it should not have oil fields.?

Today WWF is launching a campaign aimed at protecting Virunga National Park from oil extraction. The organization is calling on Soco to abandon its plans to explore for oil in Virunga and all other World Heritage Sites.

(AP) ? Japan has launched the world's first talking humanoid robot "astronaut" toward the International Space Station.

Kirobo ? derived from the Japanese words for "hope" and "robot" ? was among five tons of supplies and machinery on a rocket launched Sunday from Tanegashima in southwestern Japan, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, said.

The childlike robot was designed to be a companion for astronaut Koichi Wakata and will communicate with another robot on Earth, according to developers. Wakata is expected to arrive at the space station in November.

Robot designer Tomotaka Takahashi, of the University of Tokyo, advertiser Dentsu and automaker Toyota Motor Corp. worked on the robot.

The challenge was making sure it could move and talk where there was no gravity.

Ahead of the launch, the 34-centimeter (13-inch) tall Kirobo told reporters, "one small step for me, a giant leap for robots."

Japan boasts the most sophisticated robotics in the world, but because of its "manga" culture, it tends to favor cute robots with human-like characteristics with emotional appeal, a use of technology that has at times drawn criticism for being not productive.

But Takahashi said sending a robot into space could help write a new chapter in the history of communication.

"I wish for this robot to function as a mediator between person and machine, or person and Internet and sometimes even between people," he said.

JAXA said the rocket launch was successful, and the separation of a cargo vehicle, carrying the robot to the space station, was confirmed about 15 minutes after liftoff.

Michael Ansara in 1960, on "Law of the Plainsman."

Michael Ansara, the rugged character actor who played Klingon commander Kang on three different "Star Trek" TV series, has died. He was 91.

Ansara, who was married to actress Barbara Eden of "I Dream of Jeannie" fame, died July 31 at his home in Calabasas, Calif., after a prolonged illness, his former publicist, Michael B. Druxman, said.

Born in a small village in Syria to American parents, Ansara starred as Native American characters on two 1950s primetime series: ABC's Western "Broken Arrow" (as Cochise) and NBC's "Law of the Plainsman" (as Deputy U.S. Marshal Sam Buckhart, another Apache).

Ansara is beloved by "Star Trek" fans as one of only seven actors to play the same character ? in his case legendary Klingon warrior Kang ? on three versions of the sci-fi series: the original (in the 1968 episode "Day of the Dove"), "Deep Space Nine" (1994's "Blood Oath") and "Voyager" (1996's "Flashback").

He also had major roles in such films as 1953's "Julius Caesar and The Robe" (as Judas); 1955's "Jupiter?s Darling" (his co-star in that film, swimmer-turned-actress Esther Williams, died in June); 1961's "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (he also appeared in the subsequent ABC series); "The Comancheros" (1961) with John Wayne; "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965); "Guns of the Magnificent Seven" (1969); "The Bears and I" (1974); "The Message" (1977); and "It?s Alive" (1974).

Ansara came to the U.S. with his American parents at the age of 2. As a teen, he and his family relocated to California, and he entered Los Angeles City College with the intention of becoming a doctor.

A stint at the Pasadena Playhouse (where fellow students included Charles Bronson, Carolyn Jones and Aaron Spelling) led to roles on stage and in films.

Mayor Bloomberg Announces Approval of Development That Will Allow for Expansion and Funding of Brooklyn Bridge Park

Jul 31, 2013 / The City of New York Office of the Mayor

    ?

Mayor Bloomberg announced today that the Brooklyn Bridge Park Board of Directors has selected a joint venture of Alloy Development and Monadnock Development to design and develop a residential building at John Street in DUMBO. New parkland, to include? pedestrian bridges over a tidal salt marsh, tree-lined pathways, and a 13,000-square-foot gathering lawn, will also be built at the John Street site. The 1.5-acre site, formerly owned by Con Edison, is at the northernmost section of the park. The residential building will include 47 apartments and cultural and retail space on the ground floor, to be occupied by the Brooklyn Children?s Museum. There will also be improved pedestrian access to the park at the Jay Street.

?Brooklyn Bridge Park has quickly become one of our city?s favorite parks, attracting visitors who enjoy its innovative design, new amenities and breathtaking views,? said Mayor Bloomberg. ?New parkland and residential development at John Street will allow the park to grow and continue to thrive as one of the highlights of our city?s new green waterfront.?

?Today?s board action is another positive step forward for the long-term financial stability of Brooklyn Bridge Park,? said Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation Chairman Robert K. Steel. ?This investment in residential, retail and cultural space will strengthen the public-private partnership that has made this park so successful and spur healthy economic development that will extend beyond the neighborhood of Dumbo.?

?Brooklyn Bridge Park is emerging as one of our City?s premier waterfront destinations with stunning views and a sustainable design,? said NYC Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White.? ?Today?s announcement helps to ensure that the park will continue to be well maintained for years to come.?

?Securing residential development at John Street further strengthens the park?s financial footing and our ability to operate and maintain the park far into the future,? said Regina Myer, President of Brooklyn Bridge Park.? ?In addition, we are thrilled to be developing and integrating new parkland into the northern portion of the park and improving pedestrian access at Jay Street.?

?The Alloy Development/ Monadnock Development partnership to bring 47 residential units and the first annex of the Brooklyn Children's Museum is truly the dot on the exclamation point that is Brooklyn Bridge Park,? said Borough President Marty Markowitz.? ?Not only will this development generate income to help achieve the goal of a self-financing park, DUMBO?s Johns Street will be on par with Sesame Street for the borough?s toddler and preteen set once the renowned Brooklyn Children's Museum opens its doors on the waterfront.? And kudos to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation for moving forward on the construction of new parkland in the northern portion of the park and improving pedestrian access at Jay Street. With Brooklyn?s ?Eden on the East River,? now stretching from Atlantic Avenue to north of the Manhattan Bridge, the rest of nation is green with envy.?

?Having lived and worked in DUMBO for many years, we are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the experience of the Park,? said Jared Della Valle, President of Alloy?Development. ??1 John Street is a special site and we look forward to developing a meaningful piece of architecture there.?

?We?re very excited that the City is giving us this opportunity,? said Nick Lembo, President of Monadnock Development. ??I want to thank the teams at Monadnock and at Alloy, the?Brooklyn Children?s Museum, and, of course , Brooklyn Bridge Park and the City for bringing this to life. ?It?s humbling to work on such an iconic strip of waterfront, and we can?t wait?to see the vibrance 1 John Street adds to this already amazing neighborhood!?

Located in the future John Street section of the park, the residential development will include 47?residential units comprising a total of 96,440 square feet, 2,650 square feet of ground floor retail and 1,750 square feet of cultural space, which will open the first annex of the Brooklyn?Children's Museum, a premier cultural institution based in Crown Heights, Brooklyn that provides exhibitions, cultural and environmental educational programming for children and?families. Over the course of the lease term, the guaranteed payments from the development site are projected to result in $21.6 million of net present value. ?Alloy will design the property?and expects to achieve LEED Gold Certification. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2014 with expected completion in?winter?2015.

The development selection marks a milestone for the park?s long-term financial model with an additional source of revenue that will be directed to fund the park?s maintenance and operations. In addition, the acquisition of the site ensures site control over the entire area as outlined in the General Project Plan and the ability to move forward on the construction of new parkland. With support from Councilmember Levin, construction will also add a second major park entrance at Jay Street that will provide direct access to public transportation at York Street and increase connections to the growing commercial business on Jay Street and the surrounding Dumbo and Vinegar Hill neighborhoods.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation, known as Brooklyn Bridge Park, is the not-for-profit entity responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85-acre sustainable waterfront park stretching 1.3 miles along Brooklyn?s East River shoreline. The park was designed by the award-winning firm of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc.??

Heathwood funding campaign: We need your support!

Heathwood Press Tree - logoWe?ve recently launched a new funding campaign on Indiegogo. You can read more about this funding drive below or on our indiegogo page (http://igg.me/at/heathwood-institute-and-press/x/4227978)

    Short Summary

Heathwood Institute and Press is a non-profit, critical theoretical organisation that was formed by a collective of academic researchers across a wide range of disciplines.

Motivated and inspired by Frankfurt School critical theory, our aim is to investigate the root causes of social, economic and environmental inequality by offering foundational, multidimensional and holistic social critique as well as developing concrete, critical alternatives to the type of social policy symptomatic of today?s highly unjust societies.

We delve into history, anthropology, psychology and sociology, and ask fundamental questions about the way we as humans have historically related to ourselves, the world and each other. We look at how we humans respond to our experiences (emotionally, psychologically, and in our actions) and why we organise our institutions, societies and belief systems in the ways that we do. We ask hard questions about our theories of religion, knowledge and education, and about how we build and perpetuate ideologies and economic systems. In essence, we seek to understand how, why and when we relate to ourselves, the world and each other in destructive ways, and ultimately to develop new, healthier ways of relating and acting in the world.

To do this we bring together academics from a range of disciplines; economists, sociologists, anthropologists, educationalists, philosophers, theologians?

One of our aims is to take what we perceive to be of value from the traditions of the Frankfurt School, and to retrieve, redevelop, rework and advance it to be relevant and useful in 21st Century society. In building on and extending the traditions of Frankfurt School critical theory, we strive to not only challenge existing fields of research and policy, but also to fundamentally challenge from a foundational and multidisciplinary perspective the existing social model as a whole, with a mind towards promoting systemic change.

Through our research we are working to develop an understanding of the meaning of healthy social progress in the 21st Century from a holistic, integrated and methodologically unique perspective. We aim to achieve this through the advancement of critical theoretical thought by calling for new standpoints of critique and ultimately grounding our calls for new norms of critique according to a foundational, multidimensional critical theory of society.

In the interests of social progress we are geared toward excellence in scholarship and distinguished merit in terms of providing ground breaking research in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Economics, Psychology and Education, with the ultimate goal of communicating the findings of our research in an engaging, practical manner that is both applicable to policy makers and accessible to the general public.

Originally founded in December 2011 by a group of well-respected researchers, academics and activists, we are now actively bringing together and supporting individuals who are leaders in their area and whose research possesses the potential to break new grounds in addressing the problems that we face in today?s world.

For more information, please see the ?About us? section of our website, where you can find our full mission statement, statement of need, programme description, a comprehensive breakdown of our progressive, eco-friendly (print) publishing model, and even our (digital) democratic publishing initiative:
    http://www.heathwoodpress.com/advancing-frankfurt-school-critical-theory/

    Mission statement

The mission of Heathwood Institute and Press is to address the root causes of social, economic and environmental inequality, and to also develop healthy and sustainable alternative ways of being.

In the process we are also committed to the promotion of an informed and engaged citizenry; to promote a foundational awareness and understanding of social, cultural, economic and political processes; as well as to fight economic and social injustice, and to protect the diversity of nature and society and the natural systems upon which all life depends.

By investigating more generally the idea of ?damaged society? our goal is to produce highly respectable, critical works, whose seminal theses offer more broad foundations for concrete, critical alternatives which affirm the notion of systemic change and the need for fundamental public policy shifts. We seek to further this mission by advancing Frankfurt School critical theory in the 21st Century.

In principle, our mission is three-fold:

    1) To understand the fundamental human issues that prevent individual and collective harmony and well-being, and that impede social progress as well as the healthy development of Western civilization;

    2) To identify catalysts for change on a fundamental level across the different spheres of society;

    3) To engage with researchers, policy makers and most importantly the general public in effort to promote critical dialogue as well as active leadership and participation in the manifestation of social change

We?re an independent, autonomous research organisation in the truest sense

Heathwood is a non-profit organisation that works hard to maintain independent status as well as a respectable distance from corporate and market forces.

In order to maintain our critical stance, we choose to adopt a wholly autonomous economic and political position in the face of society?s present socioeconomic-political circumstance. For these reasons we do not have shareholders or trustees. Nor do we have ties with multinational corporations or to the more general distortions of the global market.

In the same sentiment, Heathwood does not under any circumstance accept conditional funding. In this respect we are proud and, indeed, humbled to be one of the few remaining independent academic groups left.

But as a wholly independent organisation it is not always easy to financially sustain the type of autonomous practice we believe in, especially as predominant economic policy continues to strangle the independent and public spheres of our society.

Therefore if you would like to support Heathwood, its growing list of authors and researchers, and the development of new works, any amount of financial support will go a long way toward sustaining the daily practice of our organisation.

What We Need: A breakdown of funding requirements

Our funding campaign can be broken down accordingly:

Our goal is to raise ?40,000 for the following academic year, which will support the organisation?s operational costs until more sustainable funding sources can be identified. It will also contribute significantly to future publication costs, website maintenance, the salary of its director Robert C. Smith, and the part-time employment of two academic research associates.

In addition, this will not only will this money help support the organisation?s key project, which centers around investigating the roots of social, economic and environmental inequality. It will also enable us to continue to our (free) online publication programme, which supports the democratic rights of citizens to have free access to information by providing original research and editorial content without any sort of monetary barriers or discriminations.

The funds you donate will also assist us in expanding our roster of international academics and researchers across all disciplines. This is crucial because the more researchers we?re able to support from across all academic sphere, the greater our multidisciplinary voice and the better our ability to ultimately break new grounds in understanding the fundamental problems of contemporary society.

A large portion of our total funding goal will also go toward costs for much needed editorial support. The funds you donate will help us translate important new works from German to English, and also assist us in the continuing development of the organisation?s Frankfurt School (digital) archives, which has become a valuable resource for students, academics, researchers, and engaged citizens.

If the organisation does not reach its total goal in obtaining ?40,000, the money that is donated will still be put toward the needs stated above.

    The Impact

Your contribution will make a significant impact in terms of supporting Heathwood?s project when it comes to understanding the meaning of ?social progress? in 21st Century society. It will support further research developments in the areas of foundational social critique as well as the generation of new works that deal with concrete, critical alternatives in the areas of economics, philosophy, psychology, anthropology and education.

Already our organisation has gained extremely positive feedback from academic circles all over the world. With a large and continuously growing readership ranging from academics to ?everyday citizens?, your financial support will have a direct impact on the future of our collective project and will allow us to continue to establish an open, alternative democratic dialogue with readers, researchers and policy makers.

    Other Ways You Can Help

If you cannot contribute financially, there are still other ways you can support Heathwood and its members:

*Help us speread the word via social media
*Contribute to discussions on our website ? share your thoughts on important social matters.

James Franco gets punched in the face

    TV

Still annoyed by James Franco's subpar performance hosting the 2011 Academy Awards? The disaster that was 2011's not-so-notable film "Your Highness"? Want to punch him in the face for those duds and others?

    Comedy Central just did.

In the first promo for the upcoming "Comedy Central Roast of James Franco," the network gives it to the actor ? in glorious slow motion.

Even Comedy Central's president of original programming (jokingly) questions the talent of the actor. "If only James Franco was a more successful, multi-hyphenated, incessant creative risk taker in different media, he'd be the perfect person to roast," Kent Alterman said in a statement when the Franco roast was announced. "I suppose we'll just have to make do."

The network announced Friday that Seth Rogen, who co-starred alongside Franco in "This Is the End" and "Freaks and Geeks," will be the Roastmaster.?

The roast will air on Comedy Central on Sept. 2.

"2 Guns" movie review: Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are a new breed of buddy cops

In "2 Guns," Denzel Washington, left, and Mark Wahlberg play federal agents so undercover neither knows the other's a fed. (Provided by Universal Pictures)

    R. 109 minutes. At area theaters.

Based on dark comic-book ace Steven Grant's series, "2 Guns" comes with graphic-novel pedigree. It's R-rated. So it lives up to its title with noisy shootouts ? there's even a Mexican standoff ? mixed with other events that go "boom!" And there are threats of torture and moments of outright deadly dispatch that distinguish it from much of the cartoonish mayhem of "Red 2," with which it shares some DNA.

But the biggest guns this action flick brandishes are stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg who have very different acting styles that work surprisingly well together.

Just when this summer season had us wondering which A-listers can not only open, but sustain, a major release, along comes this pair as good as peanut butter and chocolate.

Or as DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and naval intelligence officer Michael "Stig" Stigman joke, the ebony and ivory keys on a piano.

That there's little harmonious about their alliance for much of the picture is what makes the movie consistently entertaining. Like "The Heat," one of the few bona fide box-office hits of the summer, "2 Guns" builds its buddy flick atop the notion that its buddies really don't trust each other.

As the movie starts, Bobby and Stig seem like a team. They're casing a bank in a dusty Texas border town. The wrinkle here is each man ? unbeknownst to the other ? is a lawman working to entrap his partner.

That's just one twist in a film rife with them. Without plunging into the labyrinth of plot, let's just say the two come to accept that they've been double-crossed by people they put their trust in.

In fact corruption is so rampant ? naval officers, DEA honchos or, most chilling of all, a CIA operative ? that Edward James Olmos' Mexican drug lord Papi Greco seems at least transparent in his mean business. With Bill Paxton's turn as a psychopathic CIA agent, the movie also recalls "No Country for Old Men," without any of the existential insights.

More often director Baltasar Korm?kur and screenwriter Blake Masters spike the action with comedic touches, visual as well as verbal. A garage-door light offers a moment of wonderfully winking wit. And the score has pleasing hints of those breezy, violent movies based on Elmore Leonard crime novels.

But it's Wahlberg's gift for off-the-cuff gab that makes "2 Guns" such a kick.

Which doesn't mean there aren't instances that make you go "huh?" How does a high-profile drug dealer not notice the deeply rumbling Dodge Challenger and its two occupants outside his mistress' home in a McMansion neighborhood? And what did a woman named Maybelle ever do that her diner deserves the ill treatment it gets from Bobby and Stig?

Then there's the bigger problem of Paula Patton, who plays Bobby's DEA contact and sometimes squeeze. Patton's got a knotty mission that she's not entirely able to fulfill. Is she damsel or femme fatale or a bit of both? That quandary isn't the problem. The glitch is the movie doesn't make us invested in the answer.

A friend once said that buddy movies had stepped into the space once occupied by screwball comedy romances, which made a fine habit of pairing two neurotically different personalities with their unexpected complement. He was writing a review of "Lethal Weapon 2" at the time. He was spot on.

When it comes to "2 Guns," he's still right. The result of this screwball shoot-'em-up is funny and action-packed ? yup, weirdly warm and fuzzy for a movie called "2 Guns."

Fox sitcom 'Dads' blasted weeks before its debut

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? It doesn't debut until next month, but the Fox sitcom "Dads" is already taking heat in early reviews for being crass, sexist and exploiting racial stereotypes.

Facing reporters Thursday, its stars and producers defended the show as focusing on human frailties for the sake of laughs and enlightenment. They vowed to refine it, as needed, as the season unfolds, and asked its audience not to rush to judgment.

"In the pilot (episode) we all noticed some things we'd like to change or tweak moving forward," co-creator Alec Sulkin said at the session of the Television Critics Association. He acknowledged they may have "missed the mark a few times" in the pilot.

"The first six episodes, you're improving your pilot," said Mike Scully, another executive producer whose credits include the once-excoriated "The Simpsons."

"I think you're going to notice a change in the tone and balance," Scully said.

Yet another executive producer of the series is Seth MacFarlane, who wasn't present at the session. His animated comedies, including "Family Guy," have won him popularity as well as criticism for their rawness.

"Dads" centers on two friends, played by Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi, whose politically incorrect fathers re-enter their lives and disrupt them. The raucous, loose-lipped dads are played by Martin Mull and Peter Riegert.

"Historically, television has been a provocative medium. It's a medium we look at to observe ourselves," said Green, before noting that the show has "some disparaging portraits of white men."

    "Dads" premieres Sept. 17.

Russian Gays Forced To Drink Urine And Beaten As Part Of ?Cure? By Nationalist?Thugs

screenshotvideo1We have been following the threats to arrest gay athletes in Russia under the new anti-homosexual laws of the Putin regime ? a threat repeated recently by a minister despite assurances from the International Olympic Committee. One official however suggested it may be suspended for the games. Now there are reports The Putin governments alliance with the Russian Orthodox Church has expressed itself in the abusive prosecution of the band Pussy Riot as well as the crackdown on gays and lesbians. Now these reports detail videotapes of gay men being forced to drink urine and abused as a ?cure? of their homosexuality.

The abuse is being organized by a nationalist party headed by a man previously sentenced for hate crimes. The videos discussed in the latest article were shot in the industrial town of Kamensk-Uralsky.

Maksim Martsinkevich, an ultranationalist, has pushed supporters to use this ?cure? and told a website associated with Putin?s security services that ?I hope that these broken lives ? and they really do have broken lives ? will be an example to the generation growing up that they shouldn?t behave like that.?

That?s right, having urine poured on your head and being beaten by thugs can cure a sexual orientation.

Martsinkevich is obviously a disturbed and dangerous individual, but not nearly as disturbed and dangerous as the Putin government encouraging such attacks with these laws. The ?gay propaganda? law is written in absurdly broad language to allow the government carte blanche in arresting gays and lesbians.

The law passed 436-0 in the Russian Duma. The law prohibits ?propaganda of homosexuality to minors? to ?protect[] children from information harmful to their health and development.? Even suggesting the equality of gay and traditional relationships can be viewed as violating the ban on promoting ?non-traditional sexual relationships.?

Such discriminatory laws obviously emboldened monsters like Martsinkevich and his followers. The result is a major rollback of human rights in Russia ? part of an overall attack on civil liberties by Putin.

Guerra: Esto responde a otra necesidad.
