There is the possibility that you have given thought to buying a pet fish and have decided to get a betta fish. I think you will agree that there may be a couple of burning questions that might be always on the fish buyers mind--is my fish a male betta or a female betta? Can I actually put male and female betta fish together? Those difficult questions were foremost in my mind when I went to the pet store to purchase my first betta. In the middle of getting information I asked the clerk how I might tell the male betta from the female betta.

He informed me that it really didn't matter, since I wasn't ever going to breed them. That answer was basically OK with me at that time due the the fact I only wanted one fish and that fish would forever be the only one in the fish tank.

A while later that question and answer started to bug me.? I performed a little analysis and discovered that the answer to the, male or female question, was really very uncomplicated. Male bettas are the ones that have the long flowing fins, beautiful bright colors and are generally the bigger of the species.

I didn't feel that this was a big stretch for a pet store clerk to get familiar with.? I also found out that the smaller more brownish colored ones are the females. What is much more important is that, is the fact that the majority of pet stores only carry male bettas, since they are the most spectacular when in a fish tank.

Having this little bit of knowledge is vitally important for anybody who is planning on having more than one fish in a tank.?? Here are some of the reasons this is important.

Never even think that you can put two male bettas in a tank together, you see Siamese Fighting Fish and when put into a tank together, two males will fight until one is dead.

Putting two female bettas together in a tank is not the best thing to do either. Females will definitely grow to be territorial and will fight the other female for dominance of this very tank.

The surprising thing about female bettas is, if you really put 5 or more females into a tank, they will not fight. When putting females together, utilize the formula of 5 gallons per fish to help keep yourself well out of trouble, 5 fish equals 25 gallon tank.

A male and a female could possibly get along in a tank, given that the tank is large enough.

For your enjoyment, don't forget to have rocks, gravel and plants (real or artificial) in your aquarium.

Knowing which you have, a male betta or a female betta is incredibly important if you are putting a multitude of fish into your tank. To give you enjoyment and for the safety of your bettas, figure out how to identify the difference between the sexes and how they deal with each other in a community fish tank.
