A spokesperson for the company said a relay that protects the plant's electrical equipment and grid reliability failed. Despite the shutdown, the spokesperson said the plant is safe.
The plant shut down at 2:19 p.m. Wednesday as crews conducted a required test on Ginna's generator. Instead of receiving an alarm, they got a trip signal and the generator, turbine and reactor came offline.
Work is being done to modify the relay. Crews will also perform routine maintenance while the plant is offline.
There's no indication when it will be brought back online.
