I don?t think anyone would argue with me if I said most video game to movie adaptations have been a bit lackluster. In fact, I can?t think of one that was liked by even most people. If I had to pick my favorites, they would be the first Resident Evil movie and Hitman, but I?m sure I?d get a lot of disagreement and grumbling.
Not only have film adaptations of video games been unsuccessful critically, but the box office hasn?t exactly been stellar. Only Resident Evil has spawned more than one sequel and managed to stay financially viable.
The French gaming company Ubisoft hopes to buck this dismal trend by being more directly involved with video game adaptations. They?ve hired Jean-Julien Baronnet, formerly?head of Luc Besson?s EuropaCorp, and named him chief executive of Ubisoft Motion Pictures.
Baronnet routinely travels to LA to meet with studio heads and iron out deals for adaptations.
?If you look at past adaptations of games to movies, none were done by an integrated gaming company that put a movie structure inside of itself,? Baronnet said. ?We?re not here to just license and we?re not here to produce big movies ourselves. We are really in the middle of it.
?With so much at stake, it?s important we don?t give up the DNA of the game, the fundamental pillars.?
Ubisoft even develops scripts and hires actors for the leads before bringing the films to studios. For examples, they?ve cut deals with Michael Fassbender for Assassin?s Creed and Tom Hardy for Splinter Cell.
?We don?t want to make an average movie,? Baronnet said. ?We want to make a movie that will serve the brand and make happy the gamers and also the non-gamers. I think it has never been done before, but we can build this bridge.?
