Mbalula slams SABC over boxing blackout | Township Times

Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula has lambasted the SABC?s decision not to broadcast the women?s world title bout held on Saturday night, when East London challenger Noni Tenge lifted the IBF welterweight crown. Photo: SowetanLive

She knocked out Daniella Smith of New Zealand in the fourth round at Carnival City to becomethe first SA women to win a credible world title.

?It?s a shame that a fight like this one, when we produce a world champion is not televised,? Mbalula said after the bout. ?You know that our people want to see these fights blow-by-blow.

?Great things come from women. Congratulations Noni. You have proven to all and sundry what you are made of. I am very sad that people did not (get to) see you on television.

?I think it?s (the decision by the SABC) negative. It?s completely affecting us negatively. I know there are business decisions that have got to be made but we need to gather around the table to discuss with the SABC the question of boxing.

?I believe that boxing is dying in terms of live broadcasting and the SABC must take responsibility for that.?

The minister went on to say that his department and relevant stakeholders should discuss and iron out issues that are causing quarrels regarding finances and sponsorships.-SowetanLive
