Manchester United forward Robin van Persie sees huge activity boost to Official PFA Facebook page after impressive performance against Newcastle, say Digital Sports Group

(PRWEB UK) 29 December 2012

Digital Sports Group head of operations Matthew Tait has said the recent on field heroics of Manchester United's ?24 million acquisition have made a huge impact to the striker's Official PFA Facebook page, with the total amount of 'People talking about' increasing by over 30% week on week. The Facebook page has become a thriving hub for the Manchester United striker since its launch and is becoming more and more popular with each week that passes, with a rapidly growing community of fans keen to hear all the latest news on their favourite player. The official PFA Facebook page, along with Robin van Persie player profile on football.co.uk, provide the only online location of the official PFA biography, lifetime stats, news and high resolution gallery.

After listening to 'the little boy inside' him and moving to Manchester United, Robin Van Persie has been prolific in-front of goal, scoring 11 goals in 16 Premier League games for the Manchester giants, and getting the Red Devils out of some sticky situations in the process.

The Manchester United front man has made a string of impressive performances in recent weeks for the Red Devils and helped get United out of another sticky situation against Newcastle on Boxing Day. Sir Alex Ferguson's men had to come from behind three times to earn victory against The Magpies. Robin van Persie was once again indispensable for United, providing an assist and scoring a vital equaliser to make it 3-3 for the Red Devils before team mate Javier Hernandez netted the winner on 90 minutes.

Head of Operations at DSG, Matthew Tait had this to say, ?Robin van Persie really has no shortage of fans after his performances for Manchester United this season and we can see that by the success of his PFA Facebook page. All of us here at Digital Sports Group are proud we've had the opportunity to work with The PFA to give the fans a fantastic and unique fan resource for Robin van Persie.?

DSG became the official digital partner of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) earlier this year and have since launched a number of Player profile fan pages on social media site Facebook as well as providing official player pages on their football news site football.co.uk.

Have you seen these pictures? It is looking like Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are married!! Was there a secret wedding? I am so disappointed! my invite must have been lost in holiday mail… Ok seriously people – I am not one for rumors – but this one is a bit too obvious if you ask me. I mean Liam and Miley are both clearly rocking what looks like wedding rings! There have been rumors that the two wed in a top secret wedding and that they have been married for months, and now they just tweeted several pics that show them each wearing wedding rings. TMZ is also speculating, which makes me thinky it maybe trueeeee!!!!! I will wait for confirmation before I sen out my congratulations, but I a m sure TMZ is doing the digging and we will know for sure one way or another. I wouldn’t put it past Miley, she keeps her relationship with Liam very top secret so if they had a quiet low key intimate wedding ceremony – would it really be shocking? No!! NewsDaily: Pending home sales hit two-and-half year high in ...

Housing, factory data point to momentum in economy

By Lucia MutikaniPosted 2012/12/28 at 1:34 pm EST

WASHINGTON, Dec. 28, 2012 (Reuters) ? Contracts for U.S. home resales hit a 2-1/2-year high in November and factory activity in the Midwest expanded this month, suggesting some strength in the economy despite the threat of tighter fiscal policy.

The National Association of Realtors said on Friday its Pending Home Sales Index, based on contracts signed last month, increased 1.7 percent to 106.4 - the highest level since April 2010 when the home-buyer tax credit expired.

November marked the third straight month of gains for signed contracts, which become sales after a month or two, and followed a 5 percent increase in October.

A separate report showed the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago business barometer rose to 51.6 in December from 50.4 in November. A reading above 50 indicates expansion in the regional economy. It was the second straight month of growth and was driven by a rebound in new orders.

The data suggested some of the growth momentum from the third quarter carried into the final three months of 2012, even as businesses and households braced for sharp cuts in government spending and higher taxes in the new year.

Data so far in the fourth quarter ranging from consumer spending, housing, employment and the various manufacturing indicators have been fairly upbeat.

"We don't see much evidence that the economy was slowing as we headed into the end of the year, but everything could change on January 1," said John Ryding, chief economist at RDQ Economics in New York.

There are fears that currently stalled budget talks in Washington will fail to steer clear of a $600 billion "fiscal cliff" of less government spending and higher taxes, which could tip the economy back into recession.

"There is nothing here to suggest that the economy has enough momentum to withstand the shock if we go over the fiscal-cliff with no quick return," said Ryding. "The good news right now is it looks like we could have the mid-twos kind of GDP (growth) for the fourth quarter."

STRENGTHENING HOUSING RECOVERY

The economy grew at a 3.1 percent annual rate in the third quarter. The latest Reuters survey of economists put fourth-quarter gross domestic product growth at a 1.2 percent rate, mostly because of superstorm Sandy, which struck the East Coast in late October and fiscal cliff-related cutbacks in business spending.

U.S. financial markets ignored the data as attention remained focused on the developments in Washington surrounding the fiscal cliff.

Stocks on Wall Street fell, putting the Standard & Poor's 500 index on track for a fifth straight day of declines. U.S. Treasury debt prices rose, while the dollar was little changed against a basket of currencies.

Though the employment gauge in the Chicago ISM survey fell to a three-year low in December, economists expected a rebound given the strength in new orders.

"The drop in employment reflects the weakness in new orders in November and to a lesser degree the fiscal cliff. With the bounce back in new orders, employment will also bounce back," said Eric Green, chief economist at TD Securities in New York.

The pending home sales report pointed to a strengthening in the housing market recovery. Contracts were up 9.8 percent in the 12 months through November.

The housing market has turned the corner after a dramatic collapse, which dragged the economy through its worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Home sales and prices are rising, encouraging builders to undertake new construction projects. Home resale contracts were up in three of the country's four regions. They were unchanged in the South.

"The housing revival seems to be happening in a way that puts some positive feedback loop, a virtuous cycle into the economy," said Jerry Webman, chief economist at OppenheimerFunds in New York.

Branson still cleaning up ten months after Leap Day tornado

BRANSON, Mo. - Rubble, empty lots and for sale signs -- that's just part of what people see when they drive the Branson strip.

Beneath the bright lights of Branson, cleanup still continues from the Leap Day tornado. Many people are wondering when or if the town will return to the way it was.

It could be years before every damaged property is up and running again. Some business owners say they will wait a while until the national economy bounces back.

The tornado damaged roughly 52 commercial properties. About half of those, such as the Hilton hotel at the Branson Landing, rebuilt -- and are open for business.

It's been a lot slower for the other half.

Construction has just begun for many properties. And for the others a demolition date isn't even set on the calendar.

Those at the Economic Planning office say they are confident... the town will rebound from the storm.
??? ?
The Riverboat Motel is one venue destroyed by the tornado. The owner there says they will demolish the building next year -- and have no solid plans to rebuild.

Embodied Cognition: Our Inner Imaginings of the World Around Us Make Us Who We Are [Excerpt]

Editor's note: This excerpt of a chapter from Louder Than Words: The New Science of How the Mind Makes Meaning by Benjamin K. Bergen (Basic Books, 2012)? relates that our brain?s capacity to both perceive a pig and then imagine what the animal is like, even one that flies, points to an essential cognitive skill that makes humans different from all other species.

Excerpted from Louder Than Words: The New Science of How the Mind Makes Meaning?by Benjamin K. Bergen. Available from Basic Books, a member of The Perseus Books Group.? Copyright ? 2012.

Starting as early as the 1970s, some cognitive psychologists, philosophers, and linguists began to wonder whether meaning wasn?t something totally different from a language of thought [Call it Mentalese, whichtranslates words into actual concepts: a polar bear or speed limit, for instance]. They suggested that?instead of abstract symbols?meaning might really be something much more closely intertwined with our real experiences in the world, with the bodies that we have. As a self-conscious movement started to take form, it took on a name, embodiment, which started to stand for the idea that meaning might be something that isn?t distilled away from our bodily experiences but is instead tightly bound by them. For you, the word dog might have a deep and rich meaning that involves the ways you physically interact with dogs?how they look and smell and feel. But the meaning of polar bear will be totally different, because you likely don?t have those same experiences of direct interaction.

??? If meaning is based on our experiences in our particular bodies in the particular situations we?ve dragged them through, then meaning could be quite personal. This in turn would make it variable across people and across cultures. As embodiment developed into a truly interdisciplinary enterprise, it found footholds by the end of the twentieth century in linguistics, especially in the work of U.C. Berkeley linguist George Lakoff and others; in philosophy, especially in work by University of Oregon philosopher Mark Johnson, among others; and in cognitive psychology, where U.C. Berkeley psychologist Eleanor Rosch?s early work led the way.

???? The embodiment idea was appealing. But at the same time, it was missing something. Specifically, a mechanism. Mentalese is a specific claim about the machinery people might use for meaning. Embodiment was more of an idea, a principle. It might have been right in a general sense, but it was hard to tell because it didn?t necessarily translate into specific claims about exactly how meaning works in real people in real time. So it idled, and it didn?t supplant the language of thought hypothesis [Mentalese] as the leading idea in the cognitive science of meaning.

???? And then someone had an idea.
???? It?s not clear who had it first, but in the mid-1990s at least three groups converged upon the same thought. One was a cognitive psychologist, Larry Barsalou, and his students at Emory University, in Georgia. The second was a group of neuroscientists in Parma, Italy. And the third was a group of cognitive scientists at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley, where I happened to be working as a graduate student. ?There was clearly something in the water, a zeitgeist. The idea was the embodied simulation hypothesis, a proposal that would make the idea of embodiment concrete enough to compete with Mentalese. Put simply:

    • Maybe we understand language by simulating in our minds what it would be like to experience the things that the language describes.

???? Let?s unpack this idea a little bit?what it means to simulate something in your mind. We actually simulate all the time. You do it when you imagine your parents? faces, or fixate in your mind?s eye on that misplayed poker hand. You?re simulating when you imagine sounds in your head without any sound waves hitting your ears, whether it?s the bass line of the White Stripes? Seven Nation Army or the sound of screeching tires. And you can probably conjure up simulations of what strawberries taste like when covered with whipped cream or what fresh lavender smells like. You can also simulate actions. Think about the direction you turn the doorknob of your front door. You probably visually simulate what your hand would look like, but if you?re like most people, you do more than this. You are able to virtually feel what it?s like to move your hand in the appropriate way?to grasp the handle (with enough force to cause the friction required for it to move with your hand) and rotate your hand (clockwise, perhaps?) at the wrist. Or if you?re a skier, you can imagine not only what it looks like to go down a run, but also what it feels like to shift your weight back and forth as you link turns.

???? Now, in all these examples, you?re consciously and intentionally conjuring up simulations. That?s called mental imagery. The idea of simulation is something that goes much deeper. Simulation is an iceberg. By consciously reflecting, as you just have been doing, you can see the tip?the intentional, conscious imagery. But many of the same brain processes are engaged, invisibly and unbeknownst to you, beneath the surface during much of your waking and sleeping life.? Simulation is the creation of mental experiences of perception and action in the absence of their external manifestation. That is, it?s having the experience of seeing without the sights actually being there or having the experience of performing an action without actually moving.

???? When we?re consciously aware of them, these simulation experiences feel qualitatively like actual perception; colors appear as they appear when directly perceived, and actions feel like they feel when we perform them. The theory proposes that embodied simulation makes use of the same parts of the brain that are dedicated to directly interacting with the world. When we simulate seeing, we use the parts of the brain that allow us to see the world; when we simulate performing actions, the parts of the brain that direct physical action light up. The idea is that simulation creates echoes in our brains of previous experiences, attenuated resonances of brain patterns that were active during previous perceptual and motor experiences. We use our brains to simulate percepts and actions without actually perceiving or acting.

??? Outside of the study of language, people use simulation when they perform lots of different tasks, from remembering facts to listing properties of objects to choreographing a dance. These behaviors make use of embodied simulation for good reason. It?s easier to remember where we left our keys when we imagine the last place we saw them. It?s easier to determine what side of the car the gas tank is on by imagining filling it up. It?s easier to create a new series of movements by first imagining performing them ourselves. Using embodied simulation for rehearsal even helps people improve at repetitive tasks, like shooting free throws and bowling strikes. People are simulating constantly.

??? In this context, the embodied simulation hypothesis doesn?t seem like too much of a leap. It hypothesizes that language is like these other cognitive functions in that it, too, depends on embodied simulation. While we listen to or read sentences, we simulate seeing the scenes and performing the actions that are described. We do so using our motor and perceptual systems, and possibly other brain systems, like those dedicated to emotion. For example, consider what you might have simulated when you read the following sentence... :

    • When hunting on land, the polar bear will often stalk its prey almost like a cat would, scooting along its belly to get right up close, and then pounce, claws first, jaws agape.

???To understand what this means, according to the embodied simulation hypothesis, you actually activate the vision system in your brain to create a virtual visual experience of what a hunting polar bear would look like. You could use your auditory system to virtually hear what it would be like for a polar bear to slide along ice and snow. And you might even use your brain?s motor system, which controls action, to simulate what it would feel like to scoot, pounce, extend your arms, and drop your jaw. The idea is that you make meaning by creating experiences for yourself that?if you?re successful?reflect the experiences that the speaker, or in this case the writer, intended to describe. Meaning, according to the embodied simulation hypothesis, isn?t just abstract mental symbols; it?s a creative process, in which people construct virtual experiences?embodied simulations?in their mind?s eye.

    {break]

??? If this is right, then meaning is something totally different from [a given] definitional model ... If meaning is based on experience with the world?the specific actions and percepts an individual has had?then it may vary from individual to individual and from culture to culture. And meaning will also be deeply personal?what polar bear or dog means to me might be totally different from what it means to you. Moreover, if we use our brain systems for perception and action to understand, then the processes of meaning are dynamic and constructive. It?s not about activating the right symbol; it?s about dynamically constructing the right mental experience of the scene.

??? Furthermore, if we indeed make meaning through simulating sights, sounds, and actions, that would mean that our capacity for meaning is built upon other systems, ones evolved more directly for perception and action. And that in turn would mean that our species-specific ability for language is built up from systems that we actually share in large part with other species.

??? Of course, we use these perception and action systems in new ways. We know this because other animals don?t share our facility with simulation? The capacity for open-ended simulation is something much more human than ursine, not just in language, but pervasively throughout what we do with our minds. You can simulate what you would look like if you covered your nose with your hand, just as easily as you can simulate what you?d look like if you had two heads or if you had a pogo stick in place of your right leg. If simulation is what makes our capacity for language special, then figuring out how we use it will tell us a lot about what makes us unique as humans, about what kind of animal we are, and how we came to be this way.

??? One of the important innovations of the embodied simulation hypothesis?and one way in which it differs from the language of thought hypothesis [Mentalese]?is that it claims that meaning is something that you construct in your mind, based on your own experiences. If meaning is really generated in your mind, then you should be able to make sense of language about not only things that exist in the real world, like polar bears, but also things that don?t actually exist, like, say, flying pigs. So how we understand language about nonexistent things can actually tell us a lot about how meaning works.

??? Let?s consider the case of the words flying pigs. I?d wager that flying pigs actually means a lot to you, even without thinking too hard about it. Over the years, I?ve asked a lot of people what flying pigs means to them, informally. (One of the luxuries of being a university professor is that people tend to be totally unsurprised when you ask questions like How many wings does a flying pig have?) According to my totally unscientific survey, conducted primarily with the population of individuals with time on their hands and a beverage in their glass, when most people hear or read the words flying pigs, they think of an animal that looks for all intents and purposes like a pig but has wings. The writer John Steinbeck imagined such a winged pig and named it Pigasus. He even used it as his personal stamp. What do you know about your own personal Pigasus? It probably has two wings (not three or seven or twelve) that are shaped very much like bird wings. Without having to reflect on it, you also know where they appear on Pigasus? body?they?re attached symmetrically to the shoulder blades. And although it has wings like a bird, most people think that Pigasus also displays a number of pig features; it has a snout, not a beak, and it has hooves, rather than talons.

??? There are a couple things to draw from this example. First, flying pigs seems to mean something to everyone. And that?s important because there?s no such thing as an actual flying pig in the world. In fact, part of the meaning of flying pigs is precisely that flying pigs don?t exist. What all of this means, not to be too cute about it, is that the Mentalese theory that meaning is about the relation of definitions to real things in the world will only work when pigs fly.

??? Second, if you?re like most people, what you did when you understood flying pigs probably felt a lot like mental imagery. You might ask yourself, did you experience visual images of a flying pig in your mind? Were they vivid? Were they replete with detail? Of course, consciously experiencing visual imagery is just one way to use simulation?you can also simulate without having conscious access to images. But where there?s imagined smoke, there may be simulated fire. If you?re like most people, when you simulate a flying pig, you probably see the snout and the wings in your mind?s eye. You may see details like color or texture; you might even see the pig in motion through the air. The words flying pigs are not unique in evoking consciously accessible visual detail. The same is true for lots of language, whether the things it describes are impossible like flying pigs or totally mundane like buying figs or somewhere in between, like the polar bear?s nose.

??? Third, and I don?t expect that this occurred to you because it only became clear to me through my extensive research?flying pigs doesn?t actually evoke something of the genus Pigasus for everyone. For some people, flying pigs don?t use wings to propel themselves, but instead conscript superpowers. If your flying pig is of this variety?let?s call it Superswine?then it probably wears a cape. Maybe a brightly colored spandex unitard, too, with some symbol on the chest, like a stylized curly pig tail or, better yet, a slice of fried bacon. And what?s more, when it flies, Superswine?s posture and motion are different from those of winged flying pigs. Whereas winged flying pigs hold their legs beneath their body, tucked up to their bellies or hanging below them, Superswine tend to stretch their front legs out in front of themselves, ? la Superman.

??? I?ll be the first to admit that the respective features of Pigasus and Superswine are not of great scientific value or vital public interest in and of themselves. But they do tell us something about how people understand the meanings of words. People simulate in response to language, but their simulations appear to vary substantially. You might be the type of person to automatically envision Superswine, or you might have a strong preference for the more common Pigasus. We observe individual variation like this not only for flying pigs, but equally for any bits of language. Your first image of a barking dog might be a big, ferocious Doberman, or it might be a tiny, yappy Chihuahua. When you read torture devices, you might think of the Iron Maiden or you might think of a new Stairmaster at your gym. Variation in the things people think words refer to is important because it means that people use their idiosyncratic mental resources to construct meaning. We all have different experiences, expectations, and interests, so we paint the meanings we create for the language we hear in our own idiosyncratic color.

Softball playoff run among year's brightest spots - Milton Independent

There were no team state championships for Milton in 2012, but there was plenty of success in a variety of sports and four individual titles in track and field, including a third straight crown for pole vaulter Karleigh Manfredi.

The most surprising success story of the year was the Yellowjacket softball team, which in the tough Metro Division managed just a 6-10 regular-season record but came up two outs short of reaching the Division II championship game last June.

After going to East Montpelier and pulling off a 9-3 victory over seventh-seed U-32, 10th-ranked Milton got a big gift from Hartford when the No. 15 Hurricanes stunned No. 2 Springfield in the first round. That gave the Yellowjackets an unexpected home playoff game in the semifinals, and they took full advantage with a 15-0 rout to move on to the semifinals against second-seed Lyndon Institute.

At Lyndon, each team had a turn coming out ahead in a dramatic seventh inning.

The Yellowjackets snapped a 3-3 tie in the top of the last inning on a pair of errors and a passed ball but escaped further damage on a tough call at third when a Milton player tried to advance on the second error. The third baseman mishandled the throw in from center field, but trapped the ball between her body and glove as she tagged the runner, getting the out call to end the inning with just one run across. It didn?t take Lyndon long to capitalize, opening the bottom half with a pair of singles and winning the game on Lily a one-out, two-run walkoff triple.

The same weekend, Milton had more success in the Division II track and field state championships.

Seniors Karleigh Manfredi and Kevin Mongeon swept the pole vault, state record holder Manfredi winning a third consecutive title and Mongeon taking his second in a row. Samantha Rock defended her state crown in the 300 hurdles and added second place in the 100 hurdles and triple jump, while a fourth senior, Scott Hitchcox, was champion in the 1500 meters and second in the 3000.

Other strong performances at Fair Haven came from then-sophomore Brooke Phillips (second in the 100 and 300, third in the vault); senior Nathan Fleming (third, 3000) and freshman Joe Badger (third, long jump).

In distance running this fall, a cross country season centered on rebuilding the program featured some superb performances from a host of young runners with more on the way.

Of the 13 Yellowjackets running in the varsity races at the state, there were just two seniors and one junior. The top four girls consisted of freshmen Katie Rayner (ninth), Brielle McDonald and Elizabeth Bashaw and sophomore Kaitlyn Brouard. The boys were led by sophomores Alex Lauzon and Taylor Wensley, with Jackson Hickey and Dylan Hemsted next and the only two seniors in the program.

Looking ahead to next fall, the team will be strengthened by current eighth-graders Emma Preiss and Ryan Joseph. The two swept the mostly Division II Randolph Invitational middle school titles in the fall, and Joseph had one of the best seasons of any runner statewide ? winning the highly competitive Woods Trail Run in Thetford, finishing second in the U-32 Invitational, and then placing in the top 25 at a Junior Olympics qualifying race in New Hampshire (21st out of 127 runners) to earn a spot in the Northeast Regional Championships, where he placed 47th out of 105 athletes.

Milton almost pulled off a playoff upset after the long drive down Route 7, pushing No. 6 seed Burr & Burton deep into the game before the Bulldogs pulled away late for a 60-53 win.

After posting a 9-11 record in the regular season, including a late-season victory over Division I BFA-St. Albans, the Yellowjackets earned the 11th seed for the D-II playoffs.

That set up a first-round trip to Manchester to take on No. 7 Burr & Burton. Milton led late in the third quarter, 39-37, before the Bulldogs? multi-sport star Jake Stalcup converted a three-point play. That started a 13-2 run for B&B, which went all the way to the semifinals before losing to Division II state champion Mt. St. Joseph.

As he had much of the season, junior Derryk O?Grady led Milton in the playoff game with 15 points, while seniors Caleb Harris (14) and Nik Couture (9) also had big nights.

A sensational comeback bid came up just short in the quarterfinals against the same Lyndon team that ended the Yellowjackets? softball season.

Milton?s 14-6 regular season put it in the top four in Division II, ensuring home games in the first two rounds of the state tournament. Milton opened the playoffs with a lopsided win over Vergennes (61-38), but faced a stiffer test when the Vikings came to town for their March 9 quarterfinal.

There wasn?t much scoring but plenty of excitement in the second half in the crowded, loud Milton gym. Lyndon appeared on its way to a comfortable victory on the way to Barre, but the Yellowjackets stormed back into the game. Trailing 30-18, Milton got four points from Paige Johnson, a huge 3-pointer by Samantha Ryea, a steal by Nicole Menard and a pair of Katie O?Brien (16 points) baskets, eventually tying it up at 35 all. Samantha Rock?s steal and layup brought the crowd to its feet and put Milton in front, 39-38 with 19 seconds to go.

Lyndon showed its own poise, though, regaining the lead on a pair of free throws and sealing the win with two more from the line.

The Yellowjackets drew a tough seed for the Lake Division state tournament, their eighth-place finish in Division II setting them up to face No. 1 seed Northfield after an easy win in the first round.

Seth Amstein scored a hat trick before the end of the first period in the opening game at Highgate Arena, a 5-0 victory over Mt. Mansfield. Brandon Beliveau also scored in the Yellowjackets? four-goal first period, and Cody Boyson finished the scoring early in the third.

Milton was not as fortunate in the quarterfinals against top-ranked Northfield, which cruised to a 5-1 win and reached the championship game before falling to No. 2 U-32.

Back-to-back wins midway through the season were a bright spot, but an eight-game losing streak to finish the regular season left Milton ranked 15th and the Yellowjackets were knocked out I the first round of the playoffs by No. 2 Vergennes, 9-3.

After starting the spring with just one win in its first six games, Milton came up with wins over Burlington (8-3) and North Country (7-6) two days apart in early May.

The Yellowjackets did pack a season?s worth of excitement into their May 3 win over North Country, though. The Falcons rallied from a five-run deficit to tie the game on a three-run homer in the seventh inning. But leadoff hitter Mike McClellan singled to start the bottom of the inning, stole second, and scored the walkoff winning run on Jeff Cook?s bouncing base hit into center field.

The young varsity team set a program record for wins with three. All of those victories came against Vergennes, whom Milton beat 6-5, 9-4 and 17-5. Hunter Goodwin led the Yellowjackets with 16 goals on the season, and Sam Noel was the assists leader with nine.

The Yellowjacket boys and girls had mirror-image seasons, each of which came to an end with quarterfinal losses 24 hours apart in Montpelier after struggling much of the season to find consistency.

The boys earned the seventh seed with a 5-7-2 record, and cruised to a 5-0 first-round victory over Stratton Mountain before falling 1-0 to the Solons. It was the Yellowjackets? second straight 1-0 quarterfinal loss, matching their defeat at Burr & Burton a year earlier. In both those contests, Milton dominated play late with all kinds of scoring chances. Burr & Burton went on to win a second straight Division II championship last month, beating Montpelier 2-1 in the title game.

Milton?s girls had to work much harder to get to Montpelier, barely escaping their game against a ski academy in the first round. Green Mountain Valley took a 2-0 lead late into the match, but Brooke Phillips helped save Milton?s season with a sensational hat trick. Her first of the day came with just 11:09 left in regulation time, the second with only 3:33 to play, and the third 4:38 into overtime for the win.

But the Yellowjackets? eighth seed (after an 8-5-1 record) was a tough one, sending the team to Montpelier to take on the eventual state champions. The Solons only loss all fall was to undefeated D-III champ Peoples Academy ? a team that might have been the best in the state at any level ? and their 2-0 win over Milton in the quarterfinals was the closest post-season call they had. Montpelier followed that with a 3-0 win over Spaulding and an 8-0 pounding of No. 2 seed Springfield in the title game.

No deal in sight as deadline for fiscal deal nears

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Progress toward avoiding the "fiscal cliff" seemed stalled Thursday, as the Senate's top Democrat accused Republican House Speaker John Boehner of acting in dictatorial ways that prevent a solution to looming tax hikes and spending cuts.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, speaking in the Senate chamber, said the nation appears headed over the cliff because of a lack of progress in negotiations as the Dec. 31 deadline nears. He blamed House Republicans, who last week opposed Boehner's efforts to pass a narrowly crafted bill that would raise tax rates only on the very wealthiest Americans, prompting Boehner to cancel a vote on the bill.

Reid said the House is "being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker."

"John Boehner seems to care more about keeping his speakership than about keeping the nation on sound financial footing," Reid said.

Reid said the GOP-controlled House easily could have passed a White House-approved plan with a majority of Democratic votes and a few dozen Republican votes. But House leaders generally avoid such tactics, because they might alienate the Republican caucus and jeopardize the speaker's job.

Also Thursday, the White House said Obama, before leaving Hawaii, called Boehner, Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The White House statement said the president got an update on the "fiscal negotiations," but offered no detail on who, exactly, was negotiating and whether those talks were getting anywhere.

Obama was returning from vacation to the deadline showdown in the nation's capital, with even a stopgap solution now in doubt.

The House has passed a Republican plan to avert the fiscal cliff, and the Senate has passed a Democratic version. Their deficit-reduction projections differ by hundreds of billions of dollars over 10 years. Many Washington insiders say the gap could be bridged if partisan positions were not so firmly entrenched.

Leaders of the two parties are essentially daring each other to let the year end without resolving the pending confluence of higher taxes and deep spending cuts that could rattle a recovering but still-fragile economy.

Adding to the mix of developments pushing toward a "fiscal cliff," Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Wednesday informed Congress that the government was on track to hit its borrowing limit on Monday and said he would take "extraordinary measures as authorized by law" to postpone a government default.

Still, he added, uncertainty about the outcome of negotiations over taxes and spending made it difficult to determine how much time those measures would buy.

In recent days, Obama's aides have been consulting with Reid's office. But Republicans have not been part of discussions, suggesting much still needs to be done if a deal, even a small one, is to be struck and passed through Congress by Monday.

At stake are current tax rates that expire on Dec. 31 and revert to higher rates in place during the administration of President Bill Clinton. All in all, that means $536 billion in tax increases that would touch nearly all Americans. Moreover, the military and other federal departments would have to cut $110 billion in spending.

But while economists have warned about the economic impact of tax hikes and spending cuts of that magnitude, both sides appear to be proceeding as if they have more than just four days left. Indeed, Congress could still act in January in time to retroactively counter the effects on most taxpayers and government agencies, but chances are that a large deficit reduction package would be put off.

House Republican leaders on Wednesday said they remain ready to negotiate but urged the Senate to consider or amend a House-passed bill that extends all existing tax rates. In a statement, the leaders said the House would consider whatever the Senate passed. "But the Senate first must act," they said.

Aides said any decision to bring House members back to Washington would be driven by what the Senate does.

Reid's office responded shortly thereafter, insisting the House act on Senate legislation passed in July that would raise tax rates only on incomes above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples. Obama has been pushing for a variant of that Senate bill that would include an extension of jobless aid and some surgical spending reductions to prevent the steeper and broader spending cuts from kicking in.

For the Senate to act would require a commitment from McConnell not to demand a 60-vote margin to consider the legislation on the Senate floor. McConnell's office says it's too early to make such an assessment because Obama's plan is unclear on whether extended benefits for the unemployed would be paid for with cuts in other programs or on how it would deal with an expiring estate tax, among other issues.

What's more, Boehner would have to let the bill get to the House floor for a vote. Given the calendar, chances of accomplishing that by Monday were becoming a long shot.

Why the Internet killed the old salesman at the golf course : The ...

The salesman at the golf course

Formerly the salesman or sales manager could be doing his business during an afternoon golf with other businessmen. This setting has been portrayed and idealized over many years.

    The salesman:
    - Could do his business with people he knew since long
    - Had a Rolodex with business cards where he could rely upon
    - Was more an account manager than a sales guy

His world was organized and nothing could really interfere in his sales or customer retention process.
Business, golf and pleasure all fitted well together.

    Communication technologies

Communication technologies have changed the way people do business over years:
    Fax
Fax introduced the speed of immediate delivery of documents ? no physical transport required.
Thus the salesman didn?t need to visit and collect the order anymore.
That meant less face to face communications, thus less information exchanged.

    Email
Email brought the increase of speed in written communications ? both ways.
There were no more delays as with mailing letters and waiting for a physical reply.
The salesman could communicate more directly and have faster interactions.
This has increased his productivity, as he could respond more quickly and could work on more deals at one time.
Additionally there is an administrative benefit as the emails are kept automatically in a folder. Hence no administrative filing and easy retrieval.

    Mobile phones
Mobile phones made the salesperson available everywhere.
Previously calling could only be done in the office or at home which limited the availability during the week of a salesman.
Using a mobile phone, the salesman can discuss with the potential customers or customers anywhere and anytime.
Instead of face to face communications requiring appointments, calls could be made whenever possible and appropriate.

    The Internet
The Internet has bought several changes:
    1) Information distribution
The internet made company, product and services information available to interested parties and to customers, without needing to ask the salesman
The salesman was no longer in the loop with interested parties and customers
This has led to the rise of the ?Unknown Buyer?.

    2) Rolodex
The Internet allowed finding and / or retrieval of possible contacts within an organization or company.
At first this started with simple searches on Google using the domain name.
Then the specific organized websites like LinkedIn, Plaxo, Jigsaw, Zoominfo, Xing, Spoke, Viadeo, ?

The partly free availability of contact information:
    - Decreased the power of the salesman with the Rolodex significantly.
    - Changed cold calling forever.
This has increased the competition and will continue to increase competition as people within companies have become addressable.

    3) Webinars
Instead of paying a visit, sales people could set-up webinars in order to give an on-line interactive sales presentation.
No travel required for a first meeting with the interested parties: hence fewer costs and less waste of time for travel.
Again the salesman could follow-up on more leads than before and quickly move on if the potential customer is not interested.

    Still playing golf?

The Salesman can still spend his days on the golf course, while his invited business friends will be receiving phone calls or emails from competition on their smart phones whilst playing golf.
By the time the game is over, the competition could already have sent a quotation by email received on the smart phone.

Are you still playing golf too ?

iPad dominates tablet Web traffic among tablets

    1 hr.

Those spunky?Android tablets may have made big gains on Apple's flagship slate in recent months in terms of sales, but competitors still have a long way to go when it comes to actual usage. So says Chitika Insights, an ad and analytics firm that claims the iPad still accounts for a full 87 percent of all tablet Web traffic.

For every 100 iPad impressions Chitika receives, it only receives 14.75 impressions from all other tablets combined, VentureBeat reports.

As you can see in the chart below, the Kindle Fire family is far and away the second most popular tablet on Chitika's ad network, and it generates more than 20 times less traffic than the iPad, accounting for just 4.88 percent of all impressions. The vaunted Google Nexus tablets? Just 1.22 percent.

Early reports peg Microsoft's Surface tablet as the most-used Windows 8/RT device, but it only accounts for 0.22 percent of all tablet traffic by Chitika's count???just 0.04 points ahead of the defunct HP TouchPad's share. No wonder Microsoft has broadened the Surface's distribution.

Android tablets, on the other hand, have been on a hot streak of late. Google-powered tablets managed to knock the iPad's market share down to "just" 50.4 percent in the third quarter, which was the Apple tablet's smallest chunk since its launch.

One strong quarter is just the start of an uphill battle for Android, however. As Chitika's numbers show, years of utter dominance by the iPad have given it a substantial lead when it comes to actual usage. It will be interesting to see if the release of the iPad mini and fourth-gen iPad chew into Android's gains when the fourth-quarter sales numbers are released.

Ouya developer kits are shipping, $99 Android game console ...

The makers of the Ouya video game console have started shipping developer kits to folks who paid $699 or more during the team?s successful Kickstarter campaign. The company plans to start shipping Ouya units to customers early in 2013, with the video game console selling for about $99 plus shipping.

    ouya

SlashGear reports the first units should begin arriving this week.

The Ouya game console is a small box with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, WiFi, Bluetooth, a USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, and HDMI ports.

It runs Google Android software, but it?s not a phone or a tablet. Instead the Ouya console is designed to be plugged into your television so you can play games on the big screen. It also includes a wireless game controller, a game store, and more.

The developer consoles come with two controllers ? but their main appeal is that they?re shipping a few months ahead of the final units, which should give game developers (or serious enthusiasts) a chance to try out the device before it?s available to the general public, and adapt games to run on the platform.

While there?s no shortage of video game consoles for the living room, the developers of the Ouya project want to lower the barriers to entry for independent game developers. Basically, if you can create a game that runs on Android, it can run on Ouya ? you don?t need to go through the hassle of signing with a game publisher, packaging the title on a disc and distributing it to game stores.

On the other hand, the Ouya is expected to ship to regular customers in early 2013 with hardware that was state of the art in early 2012. While you can still write some pretty nifty games for the Tegra 3 processor, Samsung and Qualcomm are already offering mobile processors with significantly more graphics power, and NVIDIA is expected to launch a Tegra 4 chip soon.

Will the Ouya feel dated by the time it finally arrives? Then again? with a $99 price tag, does it really matter?

Resolve to Quit Smoking the Natural Way - Care2 Healthy Living ...

Congratulations for making the decision to quit smoking this year! It is not an easy feat, and while herbs don?t offer a magic solution for kicking the habit, they can certainly aid your effort to stop smoking once and for all. Especially if your reason for quitting is for increased health and well-being?? along with saving thousands of dollars?? then using the herbal remedies below to take a holistic, natural approach to chucking your habit is a great (and cheap) fit.

First, what does a holistic approach to quitting smoking even look like? Smokers usually have continued their habit for more reasons than one, and the interplay of these reasons is often what makes the addiction so strong. Many find tobacco to be a pleasing sedative, a soother of worry, an after-meal digestive aid, a social party-enhancer or simply another way to add some pleasure to daily life. For this reason, to quit smoking holistically, tackle more than just a nicotine addiction. Replace smoking with herbs and activities that address these issues by aiding in relaxation and reducing stress at the same time they help you detoxify and balance your mood.

Ease Stress. Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (P. quinquefolius) can help smokers adapt to stress. In fact, ginseng is known as an adaptogen and has long been used as a tonic to help increase overall physical and mental performance. Results may?include a shortening of reaction time to visual and auditory stimuli; increased lung respiration; increased alertness, power of concentration, and grasp of abstract concepts; and improvement in visual and motor coordination.

There are many ginseng products on the market, but nibbling on the end of whole roots to ingest 1 or 2 grams of the root per day will not only deliver a standard daily dose of ginseng, but will also provide an alternative to the habit of taking something to the mouth. Keep a piece of ginseng root in the car to nibble on when the urge strikes. And try these 5 more easy ways to reduce stress and unwind.

Detoxify. Smoking can overtax the body systems that filter and eliminate toxins.?After you quit smoking, toxins are released from storage tissue such as fat and need to be eliminated from the body. One organ that processes toxins is the liver. Extracts made from the seeds of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) are a remarkable phytomedicine to support healthy liver function.

Studies show that standardized milk thistle seed preparations alter the liver?s outer cell structure to prevent toxic chemicals from entering liver cells. It also stimulates the liver?s capacity to regenerate new cells and spurs antioxidants specific to the liver to scavenge harmful oxygen radicals.? Try these herbal teas throughout your cleansing process for additional healing support.

Blance Mood. Extracts of St. John?s wort (Hypericum ?perforatum)?have improved mood associated with mild to moderate forms of depression. This herb also may be useful for smoothing the emotional edge associated with ?giving up cigarettes. Participants who took St. John?s wort in studies experienced significant improvements in depressive mood indicators ? feelings of sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, uselessness, fear, and difficult or disturbed sleep.

Until recently, most standardized St. John?s wort preparations contained 0.3 percent hypericin, believed to be the herb?s primary active constituent. However, recent evidence shows that another compound in St. John?s wort extracts, hyperforin, may be behind the herb?s antidepressant activity. And, thankfully, St. John?s wort is only one of nature?s mood boosters. Try these other herbal mood enhancers to find the one best for you.

So the challenge for aspiring quitters is not just to break nicotine?s chemical grip, but to replace its benefits with equally beneficial?? but healthier?? alternatives. Start the process by adopting a healthier lifestyle, but don?t feel like you must be good at everything all the time. Holding yourself to impossible standards will ruin any New Year?s resolution.

These aren?t the only natural remedies, either. Licorice, red clover and turmeric can help, too. And for the social aspect of smoking? Enlisting a friend to dump the habit is all part of a holistic health plan.

I installed some speed reading apps and tested them. I?ve so far notices a few ?categories? or groups of equals:

Mental Health Service Agencies Looking Into Additional Outreach ...

    ?

With the news that Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter Adam Lanza suffered from mental health illnesses, much discussion has taken place about them along with speculation about risks of potential violence. Rockland County Department of Mental Health Commissioner Mary Ann Walsh-Tozer said local mental health service providers have been addressing the questions raised by their clients and are looking to organize a community forum with a partnership of public and private entities to reach out to the general public.

She said the idea is to determine ?how we might add to the package of services that are accessible to people? through community workshops or discussions.

Walsh-Tozer said, ?Our hope is to be able to do something within the month of January.??

Jawonio Spokesperson Diana Hess said a possible community forum could include Jawonio, the county Mental Health Department, Mental Health Association of Rockland County, BOCES and others.?

Samsung confirms multi-window feature and Jelly Bean update for original Galaxy Note

Samsung confirms multiwindow feature and Jelly Bean update for original Galaxy Note

That previously-spotted Premium Suite upgrade for the Galaxy Note is on its way, with Samsung revealing all the details on its site. With a refreshed UI appears very similar to its successor, the respectable Android slab will also lay claim to Air View, Multi-window apps and the addictive easy clip function that allows you to crop and share images and text with the stylus. Thanks to that Jelly Bean update, owners of Samsung's original phablet can also start dabbling with Google Now, which will continue to pluck information from your search history, location and timezone. There's no word yet on when the refreshed Premium suite will find its way onto devices anywhere, but with Samsung already singing the update's praises, it shouldn't be far away.

    [Thanks Kenneth]
