NEW YORK (AP) ? Kimberley Locke wants to fill that vacant judge's chair on "American Idol." The season two finalist feels having a former contestant on the show can bring renewed interest to the popular TV singing competition.

"I would love to sit in that chair and, you know, give some advice from the contestant's standpoint because I've been on that stage and I know what it's like," Locke said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press.

But don't consider her a pushover. Locke says she would be brutally honest about each performance and "give it with no fluff."

"When you're a contestant on that show you do need that hard truth sometimes," Locke says, anticipating her critical tone would fall somewhere between the styles of two former judges.

"I'm not quite as nice as Paula (Abdul). Paula's super, supernice but I don't think I'm quite as mean as Simon (Cowell) either."

The empty judges' chairs came after Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez decided not to come back for another season. Last week, Mariah Carey confirmed she would join the Fox show's 12th season. Other names mentioned to fill the missing spot include Nick Jonas, Pharrell Williams and Charlie Sheen.

Locke loves the idea of former contestants coming back to judge. Adam Lambert has also been vocal about his willingness to be a judge on "Idol."

Since finishing behind Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken at the end of the show's second season, Locke embarked on a solo career, releasing two albums on Curb Records. Locke recently started her own label, IAM Entertainment. Her first single, "Finally Free," came out Tuesday. She plans to release another single this year and a full album early next year.

Scenes from an Underground Fight Show in New York City

Earlier today there was an edition of the Underground Combat League (UCL), New York City's long-running, unsanctioned MMA promotion.? Unlike most of the other states in the country, New York has deemed professional MMA to be illegal.? But a loophole in the law has allowed amateur events to flourish ? albeit in a quasi-hush-hush world where fighters sometimes use aliases and the locations of shows are kept secret from the athletic commission.?

Please, don't judge them too harshly.? The UCL, for instance, has churned out over forty events since its debut in 2003, and can count among its alumni such fighters as former UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and International Fight League heavyweight Bryan Vetell (as well as a slew of dudes who went on to fight in Strikeforce, the WEC, Bellator and top regional promotions).? And before you accuse anyone of exploitation, remember this: everyone from promoter Peter Storm to the fighters to the fans wants to see New York State sanction the sport; it's only because New York won't that events like this exist.

You're probably about to ask something along the lines of "Well, don't you think underground shows like this one are setting the sport back and keeping it from being sanctioned?"? That's a clown-question, bro.? The politicians who favor MMA in New York have cited the state's thriving underground fight scene as a reason why the sport must be sanctioned.

Son of Southwest Minn. State coach dies in car crash

MARSHALL, Minn. -- Brad Bigler, the men's basketball coach at Southwest Minnesota State University, was in critical condition Sunday after a two-vehicle crash in western Minnesota that killed his 5-month-old son and injured two other relatives.

Bigler, 33, was hospitalized in Sioux Falls, S.D., with several broken ribs and a broken shoulder blade, SMSU athletic director Chris Hmielewski said. Drake Phillip Bigler, the coach's young son, was killed in the crash.

"Obviously it's a tragedy when you lose a young family member," Hmielewski told the Independent of Marshall. "The thoughts and prayers of the entire Mustang family and everybody should go out to the Bigler family as they cope with this situation."

Bigler has been head coach of the SMSU men's basketball program for three years. The Mustangs finished 19-11 last season, winning the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament championship and making their third-ever appearance in the Division II tournament.

Bigler's wife, Heather Bigler, was driving in Pope County on Saturday evening when a truck driven by a 38-year-old Starbuck man crossed the center line and struck her vehicle, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

All four people in Bigler's vehicle were hurt. Heather Bigler suffered minor injuries, and her 74-year-old grandmother, Sharon Schuler of Granite Falls, was left in critical condition, authorities said.

The State Patrol said alcohol was detected in the Starbuck man's system, and is suspected as a factor in the crash.

State records show that the driver had been convicted of gross misdemeanor drunken driving in 2005 and for driving under the influence in 2000, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. In both cases, the man's blood-alcohol content was greater than 0.20, or 2? times the legal limit in Minnesota.

He also has convictions for reckless driving and speeding.

Before becoming head coach at the university in Marshall, Minn., Bigler previously served as an assistant coach at the school and played for the Mustangs for five seasons.

Hmielewski said the Bigler family sent him a text message early Sunday saying Brad Bigler's condition had improved overnight and that he was awake and coherent.

The crash marked the second tragedy for the Bigler family in just more than a year. Brad Bigler's mother, Diane Bigler-Hagenow, died last summer in a kayaking accident near Sacred Heart.

"We're going to surround the Bigler family with all the love and support they need, and we encourage everyone to do the same," Hmielewski said.

Does It Bother You That NBC Isn't Showing Some Sports Live?

Earlier this weekend, more than forty million Americans watched NBC?s coverage of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. The next night, almost thirty million watched Ryan Lochte punish Michael Phelps in their first swimming head-to-head. Both viewer totals were American Olympic records, and if they?re indicators of what is to come, NBC could be laughing all the way to the bank.

Unfortunately, it hasn?t all been roses for the network. Despite the big numbers, scores of fans have taken to Twitter and other places to complain about NBC?s decision to herd viewers toward primetime. Thanks to the events being in England, neither Phelps vs Lochte nor the Opening Ceremonies aired live. In fact, they?d been finished for hours by the time most Americans got around to seeing them. The delay doesn?t seem to be hurting audiences, but if Twitter loudmouths are to be believed, it?s certainly hurting enjoyment levels.

According to The New York Times, the majority of advertising revenue is raked in during primetime. Since NBC is concerned letting daytime viewers see the swimming and gymnastics might split iits viewers into two groups, it?s unwilling to risk losing money. Thus, the better sports are being shown on tape delay, or via online streams for those willing to put up with slow load times.

Personally, I don?t really mind some of the events on delay. Obviously, live is better, but I appreciate the seamlessness of the network having hours to package everything together to make it look pretty.

?Restaurant Week? Launch Party Offers a Hint of ... - Real Estate Sizzle

Last night was the Launch Party for Dine Tampa Bay?s Restaurant Week, which takes place from August 3 through August 17.? More than twice as many Tampa Bay Area restaurants will be offering prix-fixe menus compared to last year?s event, so I was really pleased to see more?restaurants involved, and it was a great?venue at the A La Carte Pavilion?!

This was a chef?s opportunity to ?whet your palate? and entice the ?foodie crowd? to make ?their restaurant? stand out , offering ??samples? from their menu, or unique items NOT on the menu.??? I would have liked EVERY sample to come from the Restaurant Week menus, because they might have swayed me to add a few more restaurants to my ?already reserved? list.? Restaurant Week is a great opportunity for chefs to ?step outside the box? and create a unique menu, not just selections from the regular menu. That?s MY opinion, for what it?s worth.

To be ?fair?, I focused on the Restaurants who were offering ?entrees?, not ?desserts?, because I think that should be the focus of any restaurant, so my ?hits? and ?misses??are about the ?food? not the ?finale?, because if the food isn?t great, I won?t stay for the finale!

Here are my ?winners? and ?losers? from what I sampled last night:

Roy?s ?The ?Korean Short Ribs? over white polenta ?knocked it out of the park?! Not on their regular menu, the smoked and slowly braised tidbits,?in beef stock, with mirepoix were topped with a Ginger Scallion Sauce, along with a Spicy Red ?Kochu Jong?. Fabulous! The chef has promised me a ?special meal? to blog about, so I am holding him to that! Last year, Roy?s was one of my ?misses?, so they stepped up to the plate this year!

Chart House?On my ?hit? list for the second year, the Chart House served up a spicy Tuna Tartare with Plantain Chips. It was perfect!??? I know the Chart House from my college years in Rhode Island. The Tampa Chart House combines great food, with a great view.

Aqua?I love Aqua?from the ?cool? decor to the water view and unique food, it is always a great dining experience. ! They made the ?hit list? with an amazing Braised Lamb over Faro with Sweet Potato! Very interesting melange of flavors! It was superb!

?

Terra Sur?New to me, but no longer, this South American restaurant in Carrolwood turned out one of the tastiest dishes of the evening.? It was my last stop on the ?foodie trail?, before dessert, and I got the last of the ?Corvedito Andino? with Aji Panca sauce, roughly translated into slow-cooked lamb with a spicy sauce. If you like spicy, and unique, this is the restaurant for you! Loved it!

Bon Appetit?This little gem was serving up Ahi? Tuna on Cucumber Slices with a Wasabe sauce along, with a ?mini??Bloody Mary with ?Shrimp?and just enough ?zing??great presentation and?absolutely delicious!

Seasons 52? One of my favorites, they were serving four of their signature desserts: Blueberry Cheesecake, German Chocolate Cake, Key Lime Pie and Pecan Pie. I am putting them on the ?hit? list, not so much for their signature?desserts, but their ?Restaurant Week? menu is the same as last year, and it is a ?killer? menu, so put be sure to make it one of your stops during Restaurant Week. And, yes, for the staff at Season?s 52 who worked the party last night, I?m the blonde who scooped up the tray of ALL four desserts for our table to sample?great move on my part!

Flemings?My Award for ?The Biggest Loser? of the evening goes to?.ta da?Flemings! Known for their Steaks, they were serving Bruschetta! Are you kidding me? A ?Prime? Steakhouse who considers itself ?upscale dining? is serving chopped tomatoes on crostini to ?wow the crowd???? Bad move.? Why bother? The lousy bruschetta, combined with my last bad dining experience at Fleming?s takes it ?off? my Restaurant list for a very long time.

?

Grillsmith?Serving up the same dish as last year, where it was a ?winnner?, ?their Lemon Feta Chicken arrived this year tasting like school cafeteria food! Yuck.? Flavorless, with no sign of feta, lemon, or any salt, or flavor?it was a ?loser?.

Be sure to make reservations for Restaurant Week!? I already have four reservations and am working on a few more!? Check out the menus and make your plans early. I guarantee the best places will be booked very soon! The ?prix fixe? menus are $25, $35 or $45 per person for 3, or more, courses!

Politicians run on a variety of platforms and issues, but Bill Stouffer's may be the most ingenious yet. Stouffer, a Republican candidate for Missouri secretary of state, is focusing a big part of his campaign around saving the state's roadside billboards, a stance that, if nothing else, has earned the candidate a whole lot of free advertising.

Stouffer has secured an estimated $118,000 in free advertising through Missouri billboard owners. The majority of that support has come through Lamar Companies, one of Missouri's largest billboard owners, and the Missouri Outdoor Advertising Association has also thrown its support behind his campaign.

While many are less than enthusiastic about billboards, Stouffer and his campaign make a point of praising the advantages of outdoor advertising. "Billboards promote the state and promote tourism," Chasen Bullock, Stouffer's campaign manager, said. "That's why [Stouffer has] been a long time supporter of billboards."

At the base rate of $1,500 that Lamar's website quotes for four weeks' ownership of a one-panel billboard in Missouri, Stouffer's campaign has amassed about 78 billboards' worth of donations from billboard companies alone. A representative of the Missouri Outdoor Advertising Association estimated that there were between 8,800 and 8,900 billboards in Missouri as of this spring.

As a state senator, Stouffer pushed through legislation that allowed electronic billboards and that protected existing billboards from being destroyed during highway expansions. The money-saving measure, which, according to Huffington Post reports, could save Missouri $60 million in billboard destruction costs by allowing governments to choose to relocate them instead, a much more cost-effective strategy. The move has also saved Stouffer a bundle in campaign costs this year.

Bullock believes that Stouffer's record will help him not only in terms of fundraising, but also come November. "This bill saved taxpayer dollars," he said. "Any bill that saves taxpayers helps communicate with the voters." While that may be true, Stouffer's billboard-friendly stance may not go over well with some voters - many drivers feel less than friendly toward what's been called the "spam of the open road."

While not a conventional donation, Stouffer's campaign will certainly still benefit from free billboard space, according to Bullock. "Our donors decided to help out our campaign by donating billboard space - and we are utilizing it as part of our discussions with voters," he said.

Stouffer's platform focuses on protecting small Missouri businesses, and with money-saving legislation under his belt, the campaign is confident that its message will reach voters this time around as well. And, you know, the free billboards don't hurt.

Stouffer faces two opponents in the Aug. 7 Republican primary. The nominee will then square off against Democratic Rep. Jason Kander in November.

SugarSync (for iPad)

File synchronization software has saved my hide more times than I can count. I never worry any more about whether I have access to the files I need when I'm out of the office or need to skip town for a few days. No more toting around laptops or uploading and downloading files from USB keys. All my work is backed up and made accessible with SugarSync (free for 5GB), including through the SugarSync iPad app (free).

SugarSync, a PCMag Editors' Choice product, is a cloud-based, file syncing program and service, similar to Dropbox (also an Editors' Choice). You use SugarSync to sync files to the cloud, so that you can access, edit, or share them from the SugarSync website or any SugarSync app. The app selection for SugarSync is sweet indeed, with versions for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian. A Linux client is in beta. The SugarSync iPad app (free) is the focus of the review here, and it's a worthy app to have, although at times I wish it had one signature feature found in Google Drive (formerly Google Docs): the ability to edit documents. Let me clarify that you can only edit documents with Google Drive on an iPad if you access the service via Safari or open your documents in another app, so it's not supported directly in the Google Drive app. Still, editing is a key feature that attracts my attention, and it's a big reason Google Drive is also an Editors' Choice.

The Competition
While I still adore both Google Drive and Dropbox, and will emphasize that they're worthy of our Editors' Choice award, SugarSync does a few things slightly differently that I like, too. SugarSync is extremely simple to use, and it preserves your folder structure?no need to move files into a special folder, as Dropbox has you do during setup. SugarSync also gives you more space with a free account (5GB compared to Dropbox's 2GB) and unlimited bonus space for referrals. Google Drive is comparatively new to the syncing scene and thus still something of a work in progress. On the iPad, it's not as easy to see the source of your files, although it has a great search tool, which SugarSync lacks.

That said, let me be the first to admit that I use all three services mentioned above, but I use each one for different types of documents. I keep my work files in SugarSync, my home computer files (photos, personal documents) in Dropbox, and household files that I collaborate on with my family in Google Drive. . Who says you have to choose just one?

Features
SugarSync's iPad app is free to download, but you do need a SugarSync account to use it. The first 5GB of any account are free, but you can upgrade to 30GB for $49.99 per year, 60GB for $99.99 per year, or 100GB for $149.99 per year (monthly payments are also available, see the pricing page).

The graphical opening page is the first indication that SugarSync's iPad app is easy to use. All the icons and names you've given to your synced devices appear along the left side. See the slideshow for an example. Tap on any of the icons, and SugarSync will pull up a list of the folders and files that devices houses. You'll also see buttons for Photos, Recent Documents, Magic Briefcase, and a few others.

Say you're away from the office but need to quickly reference a spreadsheet that you (wisely) set to sync with SugarSync. From your iPad, you can navigate to the file, view it, share it via email, sync it to your iPad, rename it, copy it, or move it. You can't edit it on the spot, however, as I mentioned previously.

You can apply all the actions supported in the iPad app to batches of files, making light work of otherwise heavy lifting.

The Recent Documents button proves useful for me. It shows documents that SugarSync has identified as being recently created, or changed and synced. For day-to-day work files, this area is great for quick access to files you're likely to need the most.

Photo syncing on SugarSync for iPhone is a little less intuitive than the rest of the app, and it can become very complicated quickly, especially if you use other photo-syncing services, such as iCloud. I had a hard time figuring out where photos lived after landing on the Photos area. It's just not clear where or how they're stored.

One missing feature is a search tool, a critical omission that easily knocks this otherwise stellar app down to its four-star rating. The difficulty I had with photos would disappear almost entirely if I had a search tool at the ready.

Security
SugarSync provides decent security, encrypting your data while at rest and while in transmission. The iPad app adds another layer of security as well in the form of an optional four-digit PIN. For anyone using SugarSync to sync data that could be considered sensitive or personal, this extra protection definitely helps to make you feel more secure and keep out malfeasants.

Syncing Made Simple
If you use SugarSync and have an iPad, you'll definitely want to download the SugarSync iPad app so that you can get at your files quickly and from virtually anywhere, although you may lament the lack of a search tool. SugarSync remains a great file-syncing choice for anyone who wants simple setup, a preserved folder structure, and intelligent interface on the mobile apps. Sugar Sync is an Editors' Choice for file-syncing on the iPad.

Seeing as SugarSync and its strongest competitors are free, there's no reason you can't have them all. You might use them as I do to store files of different types or for different purposes.

NASA launches hypersonic inflatable heat shield

NASA launched a novel new heat shield prototype on a successful test flight Monday (July 23), a mission that sent a high-tech space balloon streaking through Earth's atmosphere at hypersonic speeds of up to Mach 10.

The test flight blasted off atop a suborbital rocket at 7:01 a.m. EDT (1101 GMT) from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va. It sent a small capsule, called the Inflatable Re-entry Vehicle Experiment 3 (IRVE-3) into suborbital space, which deployed the inflatable heat shield and then plunged back down through Earth's atmosphere to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean.

The mission, according to NASA, was an unqualified success and will help shape new re-entry systems for future spacecraft.

"We had a really great flight today," James Reuther, deputy director of NASA's Space Technology Program, told reporters in a news briefing Monday (July 23). "Initial indications are we got good data. The IRVE-3 flight was designed to demonstrate how the technology could be used for heat shields during atmospheric entries on future space missions.

The successful test flight is, "a first step for how we explore other worlds," said Steve Jurczyk, deputy director of NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.

"As far as the applicability of the technology, [we were] originally motivated to do this to allow us to potentially land more masses at Mars," said Neil Cheatwood, IRVE-3 principal investigator at Langley Research Center. "Mars is a very challenging destination. It has a very thin atmosphere ? too much of an atmosphere to ignore, but not enough for us to do the things we would at other planets. That was our motivation about nine years ago when we started doing this stuff."

With inflatable heat shields, scientists may be able to land at higher altitudes on Mars, or use the IRVE-3 technology to one day carry larger payloads, including humans, to the surface of the Red Planet, Cheatwood added.

The IRVE-3 heat shield is a cone made up of inflatable rings that are wrapped in layers of high-tech thermal blankets to protect it (and its space capsule) from the searing heat of re-entry through Earth's atmosphere. The 680-pound (308-kg) heat shield prototype was packed inside a 22-inch wide (56-centimeter) nose cone for the test flight. It expanded to a heat shield 10 feet (3 meters) across during the flight.

During the test, which was overseen by NASA's Langley Research Center, the IRVE-3 heat shield launched into space atop a Black Brant 4 rocket and separated from the booster six minutes later, about 280 miles (450 kilometers) above the Atlantic Ocean. IRVE-3 then inflated itself with nitrogen gas as expected, creating a mushroom-shaped heat shield known as an aeroshell.

Four cameras aboard the IRVE-3 prototype recorded the capsule's plunge back to Earth, proving that its inflatable heat shield successfully withstood 20 Gs of force (20 times the force of gravity) and scorching temperatures of about 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (537 degrees Celsius) during its re-entry at hypersonic speeds of up to 6,000 mph (9,656 kph).

The IRVE-3 heat shield splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina, where a high-speed U.S. Navy Stiletto boat crew is working to retrieve it.

From launch to splashdown, the entire spaceflight took about 20 minutes, NASA officials said. The total cost of the test flight is roughly $17 million, Cheatwood told SPACE.com.

"A team of NASA engineers and technicians spent the last three years preparing for the IRVE-3 flight," said Lesa Roe, director of NASA's Langley Research Center. "We are pushing the boundaries with this flight. We look forward to future test launches of even bigger inflatable aeroshells."

But this isn't the first time NASA has launched an inflatable heat shield into space.

The first IRVE experiment launched in 2007, but failed due to a booster failure. In 2009, the space agency successfully flew the IRVE-2 inflatable heat shield. The IRVE-3 payload, however, is heavier than the IRVE-2 design, and was subjected to more extreme re-entry heating than its predecessor.

"We had our first successful launch of this technology almost 3 years ago here," Cheatwood said. "As a result, we've got a much bigger effort going on now. This was the next step in developing this technology."
