Netflix drops in customer satisfaction

Netflix

As Netflix execs ring in the new year, they'll probably pray that things get better in 2012. A fresh consumer study reveals a big drop in the beleaguered video company's customer satisfaction scores, mostly due to poor handling of the separation of its streaming and DVD plans ??and the price hike that went with it.?

ForeSee, an analytics firm specializing in the consumer experience, released its annual Holiday E-Retail Satisfaction index, which shows that even as Amazon has risen to top place, Netflix has slid the most. As the two go head to head in the video streaming competition, the company predicts the two will continue to go in opposite directions, with "a gulf that may be too wide for Netflix to overcome anytime soon."

Netflix took hits in almost every measurement ForeSee compiles as part of the index.

With its satisfaction decline, Netflix has gone from satisfaction superstar to merely average, matching the index?s aggregate score of 79 (up one point from 78 in the 2010 holiday shopping season). Netflix saw scores drop in every single element of the website that ForeSee measures, including site content, site functionality, merchandise and prices.

ForeSee

Netflix has been trying to regain its footing since the summer, according to CEO Reed Hastings, when the company "greatly upset many domestic Netflix members with our significant DVD-related pricing changes, and to a lesser degree, with the proposed-and-now-cancelled rebranding of our DVD service," referring to the short, unhappy life of the Qwikster almost-spin-off.

Elsewhere in Hastings' third quarter letter to shareholders, he and CFO David Wells acknowledge that a "temporary cancellation surge" was the price to pay for the way they handled the 60 percent price increase that came with separating its streaming and DVD plans.

We think that $7.99 for unlimited streaming and $7.99 for unlimited DVD are both very aggressive low prices, relative to competition and to the value of the services, and they are the right place for Netflix to be in the long term. What we misjudged was how quickly to move there. We compounded the problem with our lack of explanation about the rising cost of the expansion of streaming content, and steady DVD costs, so that absent that explanation, many perceived us as greedy. Finally, we announced and then retracted a separate brand for DVD.

We first saw that wave of derision engulf the company over the summer, when more than 100,000 comments slammed the Netflix Facebook page and official blog following the separation announcement, which gave once-loyal costumers no choice in the matter, just a perfunctory heads-up that change was a-comin'. And after that, Netflix could do no right, with members complaining about snafus like the much smaller volume of streaming choices vs. DVDs (tens of thousands vs. millions), Qwikster and the threat of not being able to watch more than one stream at a time in the same household.?

Despite the threats of a mass exodus, Netflix members for the most part stayed put, though, as the company has acknowledged, it meant downgrading to streaming only. But that is, after all, the company's focus as it moves steadily into the tablet space and continues its infiltration onto TVs via video game consoles, Blu-ray players and dedicated devices like Roku's set-top boxes.?

TechCrunch recently ran a story about Citi analysts whose survey still put Netflix ahead of Hulu (and way ahead of Amazon) as the go-to site for streaming TV/movie watching, and another one that showed people spending twice as much time on Netflix than on Hulu.

Looks like whatever happens, there's almost no way 2012 won't be a better year for Netflix than this one.

Lower Indian house passes anti-graft bill (AP)

NEW DELHI ? The powerful lower house of India's Parliament passed a contentious anti-corruption bill Tuesday after hours of fierce debate even as a protest leader began a three-day hunger strike demanding Parliament adopt his tougher proposals.

The "Lokpal" or watchdog bill was passed after several amendments suggested by opposition lawmakers. The bill now must be passed by the upper house and signed by the president before it comes into effect.

"Let us pass this bill because the people are waiting for us," Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said at the end of an impassioned speech.

The bill was passed by voice vote by a majority of the members present. The lawmakers, however, rejected a portion of the bill that aimed to amend the constitution and make the watchdog a constitutional body because the government wasn't able to garner the support of two-thirds of the members voting.

The legislative showdown is the culmination of months of angry political debate and public protests that brought tens of thousands of middle-class Indians fed up with rampant corruption into the streets and put a government battered by scandals deeper on the defensive.

Hoping to defuse activist Anna Hazare's anti-corruption crusade, the government initiated debate Tuesday on a bill to create an anti-graft watchdog. But that failed to satisfy Hazare, who began his fast in India's business capital, Mumbai, demanding the proposed ombudsman be made more powerful.

After close to six hours of debate, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rose to defend the government's bill, saying that the powers of the proposed watchdog needed to have checks in place.

"Let us not create something that will destroy all that we cherish all in the name of combating corruption," he said.

"I urge all my colleagues in Parliament to rise to the occasion and look beyond politics to pass this law," Singh said.

Hazare has called the government's anti-graft legislation an attempt to fool the country.

Hazare's main complaint with the anti-graft bill before Parliament is that the proposed corruption ombudsman would not have authority over the country's top investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation. He says the ombudsman position would be too weak without that authority.

In New Delhi, India's Parliament began its debate with the government saying that the legislation maintained the "fine balance" between the powers of the legislature, the judiciary and the executive branch.

Sushma Swaraj, the leader of the main opposition, right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party, however, said that as the country waited for a "strong and effective" anti-corruption watchdog, the government was offering a bill that was "so full of holes and flaws that it has disappointed all of us."

Swaraj's party has thrown its weight behind Hazare's protest.

The legislation covers senior politicians and officials. The prime minister's office is under its purview, but with restrictions. But it gives the ombudsman no powers to conduct independent investigations into complaints of graft.

Hazare has fasted three times already. He started with a five-day fast in April, after which the government invited members of his team to help draft the legislation.

In the end the bill that was passed by the lower house kept the CBI free from the control of the watchdog. The changes that the government accepted included Swaraj's demand that the provisions of the anti-corruption law not be binding on state governments, who should be free to enact their own anti-corruption legislation.

Eight hours were set aside for the debate in Parliament's lower house on Tuesday but the debate lasted close to 11 hours. The upper house is set to debate and likely pass the legislation on Wednesday.

At the Mumbai fairground where he is fasting, Hazare told supporters earlier in the day that the proposed bill was a "fraud perpetuated upon the people by the government" and that they would teach lawmakers a lesson.

He said his supporters would travel across the country to campaign against all those political parties who did not support his version of the bill.

He has also asked his supporters to court arrest after he ends his fast on Dec. 29.

Hazare, who claims inspiration from Mohandas K. Gandhi, has called his protest against corruption India's second freedom struggle and has fasted three times already to garner support for his demands.

Thousands of people, many waving Indian flags and wearing the trademark white cap made popular by first independence leader Gandhi and now Hazare, gathered in support. As of Tuesday afternoon, the crowd was thinner than the tens of thousands Hazare drew to an August protest in the Indian capital.

Hazare is not without critics who say his populist campaign attempts to vilify all politicians and hold elected officials hostage.

Dozens of those critics also came out on the streets Tuesday, waving black flags and shouting slogans as Hazare's motorcade passed through the city.

Doctors were monitoring Hazare's health and said that he was running a fever and his blood pressure was high. News reports said that ambulances were waiting on standby near the fairground.

Arvind Kejriwal, a key Hazare aide, said that his supporters had been asking him to break his fast and take medication but until late Tuesday he had refused to do so.

MIT scholar builds a self-balancing unicycle to roll fast and furious around campus (video)

Sure, we've shown you the goofy SBU v2.0 unicycle, but what's better than a glorious DIY project? MIT student Stephan Boyer has built his own electrical uni-ride, which he's dubbing the "Bullet." The single-wheel transporter packs a custom MIG-welded steel body, two 7Ah 12-volt batteries, an ATmega328 chip and a 450-watt electric motor. While the Bullet isn't the speediest of solowheel demons (15mph max), it's on par with its $25,000 Ryno Motors counterpart. As far as power efficiency, the Bullet can go up to five miles on a single charge -- more than enough juice to hit a few classroom round-trips. There's some "Learning to Ride" tips from the creator himself at the source link, but in the meantime you can watch this unified purple rider in action after the break.

Ron Paul camp fires back at ex-aide over column on Israel, gays

The Ron Paul camp is dismissing a scathing personal account published Monday by former longtime Paul aide Eric Dondero, who paints the Texas congressman as "intolerant" of Spanish speakers, anti-Israel and anti-Israeli, personally uncomfortable around homosexuals, and "out of touch" with black and Hispanic culture -- among other controversial claims.

"Eric Dondero is a disgruntled former staffer who was fired for performance issues," Paul spokesman Jesse Benton said in an emailed response to Hotsheet responding to the column. "He has zero credibility and should not be taken seriously."

In the piece published by RightWingNews.com, Dondero writes that he is attempting to "set the record straight" about allegations that Paul - who has lately been fending off criticism about a controversial newsletter published under his name 20 years ago that contained racist language - is a racist, homophobic, or an anti-Semite.

Full CBSNews.com coverage: Election 2012

"Is Ron Paul a 'racist.' In short, No. I worked for the man for 12 years, pretty consistently. I never heard a racist word expressed towards Blacks or Jews come out of his mouth," writes Dondero, who worked for Paul since the late 1980s, serving as both a campaign operative and, from the late 1990s until 2003, as a congressional aide.

But Dondero also makes claims in the article that are likely to spark more controversy about the candidate, who has been rising in the polls for the Republican nomination, both in Iowa and nationwide.

Of U.S. involvement in World War II, he says Paul "strenuously does not believe the United States had any business getting involved in fighting Hitler in WWII. He expressed to me countless times, that 'saving the Jews,' was absolutely none of our business."

"Is Ron Paul an Anti-Semite? Absolutely No. As a Jew, (half on my mother's side), I can categorically say that I never heard anything out of his mouth, in hundreds of speeches I listened too over the years, or in my personal presence that could be called, 'Anti-Semite.' No slurs. No derogatory remarks," Dondero writes.

Still, on the topic of Israel, Dondero says Paul is "most certainly Anti-Israel, and Anti-Israeli in general. He wishes the Israeli state did not exist at all. He expressed this to me numerous times in our private conversations."

He also detailed a story in which Paul refused to use a homosexual man's bathroom, instead opting to use a public restroom in a fast food restaurant.

"He is not all bigoted towards homosexuals," Dondero writes. "He supports their rights to do whatever they please in their private lives. He is however, personally uncomfortable around homosexuals, no different from a lot of older folks of his era."

Moreover, Dondero posited that while Paul is not racist, he knew him as "'out of touch,' with both Hispanic and Black culture[s]."

When reached on the phone, Dondero categorically denied having been fired by Paul: "I dispute that vehemently," he told Hotsheet. "I'll take him to court over that if that's what he's saying."

Dondero says he resigned in 2003 after going "back and forth" with Paul about it for about six months. "Some days it was like he didn't want me to resign" while other days he did not want to resign. Ultimately, Dondero said it was his differences with Paul over his Iraq policy that led him to quit. (The Paul campaign did not respond to a request for comment on this claim.)

This is not the first time the former staffer has publicly gone after Paul. In 2007, he challenged Paul for his congressional seat. Then, as now, Paul's team said Dondero had been fired and described him as a disgruntled former staffer - as well as "looney-tunes."

The former Paul staffer says he penned his Monday column because the media was misrepresenting the story.

"I'm speaking out about what I saw as his employee - from my perspective. People are getting a lot of things wrong on both sides," he said.

Dondero also told Hotsheet that Paul had a history of liking to "pal around" with racists and that, while working for the congressman, had "been to a couple really far out events with him" where racists would likely be present.

"Sometimes he doesn't even realize that they're racist and everybody on staff just cringes," Dondero said.

In an interview with the New York Times that was published Monday, Paul said he "wouldn't be happy" if anti-Jewish or antiblack people were volunteering on his behalf. But, he said, he would not disavow their support.

"If they want to endorse me, they're endorsing what I do or say -- it has nothing to do with endorsing what they say," Paul told the Times.

The Times story cites several far-right groups - the ranks of which include some "white supremacists, survivalists and anti-Zionists" - who have rallied around Paul, and argues that "a look at the trajectory of Mr. Paul's career shows that he and his closest political allies either wittingly or unwittingly courted disaffected white voters with extreme views as they sought to forge a movement from the nether region of American politics."

Paul, who has said previously that he would not have voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (although he says he supports its intent), says his willingness to receive support from extremists is "incidental."

"I'll go to anybody who I think I can convert to change their viewpoints -- so that would be to me incidental," he told the Times. "I'm always looking at converting people to look at liberty the way I do."

In recent weeks, Paul has been questioned about his affiliation with a series of racially derogatory newsletters that appeared under his name in the 1980s and 1990s.

Paul has reiterated that he did not write the newsletters, saying the controversial comments "are not mine and do not represent what I believe or have ever believed."

Android Tablets Gaining Steam on Apple iPad 2

Android tablet makers are starting to prove that Apple?s iPad 2 isn?t the only viable tablet option on the market. In its Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, IDC says Android tablets are set to make some huge market share gains on the iPad.

According to the report, Android tablets will see an increase from their 32.4 percent third quarter market share to an impressive 40.3 percent in the fourth quarter of this year. Conversely, IDC says Apple will see its iPad 2 shed 2.5 percent of its market share, falling from 61.5 percent in the third quarter of 2011 to 59 percent in the fourth quarter.

The IDC report credits the release of Amazon?s Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble?s Nook Tablet as the reason for the expected increase in Android market share. ?Amazon and Barnes & Noble are shaking up the media tablet market, and their success helps prove that there is an appetite for media tablets beyond Apple?s iPad,? explained IDC?s research director, Mobile Connected Devices, Tom Mainelli.

Apple?s projected fourth quarter market share decrease follows a previous drop in market share from 63.3 percent in the second quarter of 2011 to 61.5 in the third quarter. Despite Apple?s losses, Mainelli said he still expects the company to have a historic fourth quarter. The company is also expected to make gains in the enterprise and education markets in 2012.

Sewer Rats: The city is big, it's not uncommon for a few children to slip through its grasp, and into the sewers below. We're just the lucky ones. We have each other. But when the leader of these street rats dies, leaving them without a grown up, without a guide, all alone in the city, they've got to fight just to survive.

A Broken Family: Mommy's got a drinking problem, Daddy doesn't give a care, big brother's hangin' with the wrong crowd, and little sister sees monsters in her head. Why can't we all just get along? (Characters' problems are obviously negotiable. I just wanted to give an example of how it could work out.)

WhiteFire Academy: Her Dad's the Headmaster of Whitefire Boys' Preparatory High School. So of course, when it's time for her to start high school, he decides to enroll her in the all boys high school. Dorms and everything. What in the world is she going to do, and how are the boys going to handle this? Will she have to wear the boys uniform? Insert chaos here.

I Need a Hero: A fugitive witch is running through the forest, being chased by a Shadow Hunter - witch hunters employed by the King - and as she runs into a Dark Knight there, who offers her protection in return for her healing services. (Characters can be the Shadow Hunter, the witch/wizard, the Dark Knight, and anyone who happens to join the Shadow Hunter or Dark Knight's party).

A Golden Circle: A group of high school kids, your average high school kid, each with their own personal torments and secrets. The only reason they survive is because they cling to each other and hold each other up. But when two of them start dating, the lies start flowing. And no one can tell what's true anymore, or if they were ever really friends, even in the beginning.

Anyone interested?

Paul Stoller: Winter Break

After what increasingly seems like a lighting fast roller-coaster ride, I recently huffed and puffed my way to submitting final grades, which marked the end my 61st semester of university teaching. You could say that the huffing and puffing is due to my age or my physical condition. Neither would be true. I may be approaching "elder" status, but I am physically fit. You could say that so many years of university teaching have made me weary of the old routines -- same subject, anthropology and the same set of courses. But as time as passed, I've come to enjoy teaching a great deal.

So if I'm physically fit and enjoy teaching, why do I find myself exhausted by the end of a 15-week semester?

Part of the reason, perhaps, is the importance that our institutions place upon getting grades. Students, of course, have always been very much concerned about grades. Getting good grades has always been a good a way to move forward on the highway that leads to successful careers in medicine, law, information technology or business. On that venerable highway there has never been much time for taking a frivolous detour that leads to an uncertain destination. In recent years, though, student tunnel vision seems to have become even more narrowly focused. Many of the students I teach would like me to agree to a grand bargain: the best possible grade for the least amount of effort. There are, of course, notable and inspiring exceptions. Even so, every semester students have the chutzpah to ask me to change their grade -- for no good reason. Two weeks ago, one of my introductory students who had earned a "C+" wondered if I could change her grade to "B-."

"Can't I get some extra points for attending class?" she asked.

Another student, who had barely passed my introductory class, wrote:

"Is there any way you could change my grade to a "C-?" she asked, not even offering up her record of attendance as an argument for a grade change.

Fortunately, student encounters about grades, which are always a bit irritating, are few and far between. They don't account for my end-of-semester fatigue.

Something has changed in higher education. When I began professing in 1980, there seemed to be more time to teach. We had the same 15-week semesters, but my courses were much more demanding -- for both me as well as for my students. We covered more topics and did so in greater depth. The readings were more extensive. I assigned more research papers, which required extensive work in the library. Students found the time come to my office for conversations about anthropology, philosophy, literature, or even the meaning of life! These days most of my students complain about not having enough time to do the course readings, let alone a series of moments to do more than a cursory amount archival research for a paper. Some of them hand in assignments after the due date. Most of them avoid my office and any kind of serious face-to-face social interaction. Although the aforementioned grade disputes do require some degree of professor-student interaction, they are usually argued in the impersonal domains of cyberspace.

There are external forces that have propelled these educational changes. In these hard times, many contemporary students have to work one or two jobs to pay for college expenses. Accordingly, they have little extra-time to read beyond the assignment, daydream, or to take intellectual risks. Contemporary professors, for their part, are so saddled with so many corporately contoured administrative tasks -- committee work, assessment studies, assessment workshops, assessment reports, peer evaluations, student evaluations, not to forget large classes to teach, grade, and, lest I forget, assess -- that we have little time to think about what we've done or what we want to do.

Every semester over-worked students have a limited amount of time to study. Professors are "too busy" to refine their teaching or pursue their research, which usually improves the quality of instruction. Students and professors are trapped in increasingly corporate institutions of higher learning that are designed for processing products -- moving student bodies through institutional stages -- that produce positive institutional profiles.

Incessant institutional processing produces a great deal of end-of-the-semester student and professorial fatigue, a symptom that something important is missing from the mix of elements on our university campuses. Higher education should be more than a system for processing student bodies. Indeed, it should be the serious attempt to teach young people how to be in the world--an attempt that will set a course for the future.

If we recognize the fatigue for what it is, we should use the Winter Break to recharge our existential batteries and begin anew the pursuit of knowledge.

Here's a New Year's resolution for college students: make a habit of visiting your professors and discussing the world of ideas. Taking such a small step will not only be rewarding for students and professors, but will make the university a little less corporate and a little more humane, which means, that everyone benefits.

Web gambling gets boost from Obama administration (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Obama administration cleared the way for U.S. states to legalize Internet poker and certain other online betting in a switch that may help them reap billions in tax revenue and spur web-based gambling.

A Justice Department opinion dated September and made public on Friday reversed decades of previous policy that included civil and criminal charges against operators of some of the most popular online poker sites.

Until now, the department held that online gambling in all forms was illegal under the Wire Act of 1961, which bars wagers via telecommunications that cross state lines or international borders.

The new interpretation, by the department's Office of Legal Counsel, said the Wire Act applies only to bets on a "sporting event or contest," not to a state's use of the Internet to sell lottery tickets to adults within its borders or abroad.

"The United States Department of Justice has given the online gaming community a big, big present," said I. Nelson Rose, a gaming law expert at Whittier Law School who consults for governments and the industry.

The question at issue was whether proposals by Illinois and New York to use the Internet and out-of-state transaction processors to sell lottery tickets to in-state adults violated the Wire Act.

But the department's conclusion would eliminate "almost every federal anti-gambling law that could apply to gaming that is legal under state laws," Rose wrote on his blog at www.gamblingandthelaw.com.

If a state legalized intra-state games such as poker, as Nevada and the District of Columbia have done, "there is simply no federal law that could apply" against their operators, he said.

The department's opinion, written by Assistant Attorney General Virginia Seitz, said the law's legislative history showed that Congress's overriding goal had been to halt wire communications for sports gambling, notably off-track betting on horse races.

Congress also had been concerned about rapid transmission of betting information on baseball, basketball, football and boxing among other sports-related events or contests, she summarized the legislative history as showing.

"The ordinary meaning of the phrase 'sporting event or contest' does not encompass lotteries," Seitz wrote. "Accordingly, we conclude that the proposed lotteries are not within the prohibitions of the Wire Act."

The department expressed no opinion about a provision in the law that lets prosecutors shut down phone lines where interstate or foreign gambling is taking place.

Many of the 50 U.S. states may be interested in creating online lotteries to boost tax revenues and help offset the ripple effect of a federal deficit-reduction push.

The global online gambling industry grew 12 percent last year to as much as $30 billion, according to a survey in March by Global Betting and Gaming Consultancy, based on the Isle of Man, where online gambling is legal.

Federal prosecutors in April charged three of the biggest Internet poker companies with fraud and money-laundering along with violations of another federal law, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Act of 2006.

The government outlined an alleged scheme by owners of the three largest online poker companies - Full Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker and PokerStars - to funnel gambling profits to online shell companies that would appear legitimate to banks processing payments.

With the holidays comes the second week of the bowl season. This coming week features a lot of intriguing matchups, with Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III in action, along with several big name teams who struggled through disappointing seasons. Here?s are all the info you need to know for the next week in college football.

SHERATON HAWAII BOWL: #21 Southern Miss (11-2) vs. Nevada (7-5)

[Saturday, Dec. 24 at 8:00 PM ET on ESPN]

Its last time out, Southern Miss scored one of the biggest upsets of the season, knocking off undefeated Houston in the Conference USA title game. They?ll look to build on that momentum and send coach Larry Fedora, who has accepted the North Carolina head coaching job but will be coaching the Golden Eagles in this bowl game, out a winner. A Southern Miss win would give the Golden Eagles the first 12-win season in school history.

This game could feature a lot of offense, as both teams rank in the top 13 nationally in total offense and top 30 in scoring. The Wolfpack ranks ninth in the nation in rushing, and this game will likely hinge on Nevada?s ability to run against a Southern Miss defense that has given up less than 113 rushing yards per game this season.

ADVOCARE V100 INDEPENDENCE BOWL: Missouri (7-5) vs. North Carolina (7-5)

[Monday, Dec. 26 at 5:00 PM ET on ESPN2]

These are two teams in transition who are looking to set the stage for next year. The Tigers closed out the season with three straight wins to earn a bowl bid in their final game as a member of the Big 12. After a rough final month (leading rusher Henry Josey going down with a knee injury, head coach Gary Pinkel getting arrested on a DUI), Mizzou is looking to end on a positive note before heading to the SEC next year. The Tigers defense has been suspect this year, but the offense ranks 12th nationally in total yards. They certainly have more weapons on offense than North Carolina, but they have underachieved at times this season and will need a complete effort against a young, but solid, Tarheels squad.

After former coach Butch Davis was fired just a month before the season began, many Tar Heel faithful questioned the ability of the young team to respond. And while there were certainly some speed bumps, a lot of credit goes to interim coach Everett Withers for keeping the team focused. Although the Heels lost four of their final six games, they still made a bowl game for the fourth consecutive season, the longest such run for UNC since 1992-98. The Heels will be without top receiver Dwight Jones in this game due to an NCAA suspension.

LITTLE CAESARS BOWL: Western Michigan (7-5) vs. Purdue (6-6)

[Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 4:30 PM ET on ESPN]

Four years ago, Purdue won a 51-48 shootout against Central Michigan in this game. This year, the Boilermakers will need a stronger defensive effort if they want to secure their first winning season since 2007. Purdue, which ranks 66th nationally in scoring defense and 68th in total defense, will look to slow down a potent Western Michigan aerial attack led by Broncos receiver Jordan White, who leads the nation in catches (127) and receiving yards (1,646). In his last four games, White has scored nine touchdowns and averaged over 163 yards per game.

Western Michigan has lost six straight to Big Ten opponents and is looking for its first bowl win in school history (0-4 all-time).

BELK BOWL: Louisville (7-5) vs. North Carolina State (7-5)

[Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 8:00 PM ET on ESPN]

North Carolina State was one of the more Jekyll-and-Hyde teams down the stretch, dropping a late-season game to 4-8 Boston College before regrouping the next week to knock off then-#7 Clemson the week before Thanksgiving to become bowl eligible. This week, we?ll see which Wolfpack team shows up to play a Louisville team that lost four of its first six, but then closed with wins in five of its last six games after making a change at offensive coordinator.

Despite its recent success, Louisville ranks 103rd in the nation in scoring and 104th in total offense. However, the Cardinals, who start 10 freshmen, have found success under quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who set the school record for passing by a freshman. However, he will have his work cut out for him against a Wolfpack defense that led the nation in interceptions.

MILITARY BOWL-PRESENTED BY NORTHROP GRUMMAN: Toledo (8-4) vs. Air Force (7-5)

[Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 4:30 PM ET on ESPN]

If you like offense, this could be the game for you. Air Force put up 45 points in each of its final two games, while Toledo averaged an FBS-best 53.8 points per game during the month of November. With both team defenses giving up over 27 points a game this season, this could be a shootout. Air Force lives and dies by the run, utilizing the triple option to rank second in the nation in rushing. Toledo, on the other hand, features a more balanced attack that ranks 16th in rushing and 30th in passing. With the Falcons? reliance on the run, this game could be decided by Toledo?s rushing defense, which has given up an average of just 123 yards per game this season.

Air Force had high hopes this year, but was hampered by a rash of injuries. Still, this is the first time in school history the Falcons have won seven or more games in five straight years. On the other side, the Rockets will be without former head coach Tim Beckman, who resigned to take the head job at Illinois. However, don?t expect an emotional letdown from Toledo as Matt Campbell, the architect of the Rockets? high-powered offense, has been promoted to head coach.

BRIDGEPOINT EDUCATION HOLIDAY BOWL: #24 Texas (7-5) vs. California (7-5)

[Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 8:00 PM ET on ESPN]

Texas lost three of its last four coming into bowl season and, after missing the postseason last year for the first time in 12 years, is desperately looking to end the season on a high note. California, meanwhile, is riding high after winning three of its last four and nearly pulling off an upset of then-#9 Stanford. Texas offense continues to sputter (59th in the nation in scoring) as two quarterbacks ? David Ash and Case McCoy ? continue to split time without either really having much of an impact. The two have combined for just 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. On the other side, since a horrific four-interception game against UCLA in late October, Cal quarterback Zach Maynard has thrown for 763 yards, five touchdowns and just one interception in his last four games. He is complemented by running back Isi Sofele, who has averaged 142.3 yards per game over that same stretch.

There is some bad blood in this matchup, at least on one side. Cal fans still haven?t forgotten how, in 2004, Texas coach Mack Brown successfully lobbied poll voters to move Texas ahead of Cal in the final poll for a spot in the Rose Bowl, costing the Bears what would have been their first Rose Bowl appearance since 1959.

CHAMPS SPORTS BOWL: Florida State (8-4) vs. Notre Dame (8-4)

[Thursday, Dec. 29 at 5:30 PM ET on ESPN]

Two of the most storied programs in history will match up in a game that features two teams who had much higher expectations than an 8-4 showing. Florida State was ranked as high as #5 before dropping three straight games following an injury to quarterback E.J. Manuel. And while a five-game win streak in mid-season and a season-closing win over archrival Florida were causes for celebration, Seminoles fans were thinking BCS, not Champs Sports.

Hopes were equally high for the Fighting Irish coming into this season, but an 0-2 start quickly threw some cold water on that enthusiasm. Aside from a September upset of then-#15 Michigan State, Notre Dame has continued to underachieve this season, scoring wins over largely mismatched opponents while never really being competitive in losses to USC and Stanford.

The bright spot for the Seminoles has been the defense, which ranks fourth in the nation in scoring and second in rushing, has thrown two shutouts and has given up more than 19 points just twice this season. That should pose quite a challenge to a Notre Dame offense without leading scorer, running back Jonas Gray (12 touchdowns before going down with a knee injury), and inconsistent quarterback play (quarterback Tommy Rees was benched in the Irish?s season-ending loss to Stanford).

VALERO ALAMO BOWL: #12 Baylor (9-3) vs. Washington (7-5)

[Thursday, Dec. 29 at 9:00 PM ET on ESPN]

Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III will look to add to his legacy (he already holds 46 different school records) and give the Bears their first bowl win since 1992. With 3,998 passing yards to go with 36 touchdowns and just six interceptions, Griffin leads the nation in passing efficiency in a single season (192.3), an NCAA record. RG3 has also added 644 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. The Bears rank second in the nation in total offense and third in scoring.

That certainly does not appear to be a favorable matchup for a Washington defense that ranks 94th in total defense and 99th in scoring. It certainly appears that for the Huskies to have a shot they?ll have to get it done on offense going against a Bears defense that ranks 114th in the nation. Quarterback Keith Price set a school record this year with 29 touchdown passes and has the luxury of a solid running game led by Chris Polk, who has rushed for over 1,300 yards and scored 15 touchdowns.

A Baylor win would give the Bears their first 10-win season since 1980.

BELL HELICOPTER ARMED FORCES BOWL: Brigham Young (9-3) vs. Tulsa (8-4)

[Friday, Dec. 30 at 12:00 PM ET on ESPN]

After dropping two of its first three games, BYU has been on a tear, winning eight of its last nine and scoring 40 or more points in its last three games. Despite those impressive offensive numbers of late, the Cougars are led by their defense, which ranks 17th nationally in total defense, seventh in pass defense and 23rd in scoring. That should pose quite a challenge to a Tulsa offense that has averaged over 34 points per game.

The Golden Hurricane offense is led by fifth-year senior quarterback G.J. Kinne, who has thrown for 2,876 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this season. He is complemented by a running back tandem of Ja?Terian Douglas and Trey Watts that has combined for over 1,700 yards on the ground. Tulsa?s four losses this season were all to teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of the game (Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Boise State and Houston).

NEW ERA PINSTRIPE BOWL: Rutgers (8-4) vs. Iowa State (6-6)

[Friday, Dec. 30 at 3:20 PM ET on ESPN]

After pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the college football season over then-#2 Oklahoma State, Iowa State lost their final two games of the season to fall to .500. This week, the Cyclones will look to get a win and secure just their second winning season in the last six years. ISU is led by freshman quarterback Jared Barnett. Since taking over the starting job in late October, Barnett has thrown for 1,178 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions, while also running for 435 yards and a touchdown. In the upset of Oklahoma State, he accounted for 460 total yards and three touchdowns.

Rutgers will likely have to get the job done on defense. The Scarlet Knights rely on a defensive unit that ranks 14th in the nation in total defense and 12th in scoring defense. They?ll need to get the job done to compensate for an anemic offense that 115th in rushing and 100th in total offense. The one bright spot has been star wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, who set a Big East record with 109 receptions this year.

FRANKLIN AMERICAN MORTGAGE MUSIC CITY BOWL: Mississippi State (6-6) vs. Wake Forest (6-6)

[Friday, Dec. 30 at 6:40 PM ET on ESPN]

Wake Forest was thinking about a potential ACC title after starting the season 5-2. But after losing four of their last five games, the Demon Deacons were lucky to even make a bowl game. You almost have to wonder how Wake Forest finds itself in this position, with the 76th-ranked offense and 69th-ranked defense. However, expect a solid effort out of the Demon Deacons, who are making their first postseason appearance in three years. Wake has won three straight bowl games, and six of its last seven.

Mississippi State has proven equally strong in the postseason, winning its last four bowl games. The Bulldogs offense has been woeful this year, ranking 87th nationally, but is bolstered by a defense that has given up fewer than 20 points per game this season. This marks Mississippi State?s first back-to-back bowl seasons since 1999-2000.

INSIGHT BOWL: #14 Oklahoma (9-3)?vs. Iowa (7-5)

[Friday, Dec. 30 at 10:00 PM ET on ESPN]

Already a heavy underdog to Oklahoma, what little chance Iowa had of pulling off an upset likely went out the window this week when star running back Marcus Coker was suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules. Coker was the Big Ten?s second-leading rusher with 1,384 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. Iowa still has a home run threat in wide receiver Marvin McNutt (a school-record 1,269 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns this year). But without Coker (the next most experienced back has just 18 carries for 79 yards), it is difficult to see Iowa?s offense having much success against the Sooners.

On the other side, Oklahoma was the preseason #1 team but were knocked out of BCS contention by a combination of upsets and injuries (leading rusher Dominique Whaley and all-time receiver Ryan Broyles were both lost with season-ending leg injuries). Despite those setbacks, the Sooners? offense still proved to be plenty potent, ranking fourth nationally in both passing yards and total offense and 10th in scoring. However, this was not a vintage OU defense. During the Sooners? 3-3 finish, they gave up an average of 449.2 and 29.7 points per game.

Back in campaign mode, presidential hopefuls focus

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel, File)

(AP) ? Republicans in search of their party's presidential nomination are returning to campaign mode after a brief Christmas respite, with Rick Santorum planning a hunting trip with conservatives in Iowa and Mitt Romney phoning supporters.

With just a week until Iowa holds its leadoff caucuses and many still undecided, the final push ahead of the Jan. 3 contests was heading into a critical time. Campaigns planned new television ads and phone calls to persuade holdout caucusgoers still weighing their options.

Romney, who kept this state at arm's length for most of the year, seemed to increase his efforts in Iowa as polls found him in a stronger position. He planned to talk with supporters in a series of telephone calls here and to New Hampshire and Florida on Monday between working on a speech that aides described as his final pitch to Iowans. Romney planned to deliver that speech Tuesday evening and then set out on a bus tour of Iowa.

However, he was to share the highways with Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. All scheduled bus tours to start then, too.

Each is running out of time and looking to derail Rep. Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who seems to have the most sophisticated network of volunteers ready to organize ahead of the caucuses. Paul was to return to Iowa this week to meet with supporters he has kept in touch with since his unsuccessful run in 2008.

Others, too, were ready to turn on their own political machines and had fresh ads ready to air.

Gingrich, who last week criticized the negative tone of the campaign, was ready to directly challenge Romney on the economy, an issue Romney has made central to his campaign. Gingrich's standing in public and private polls has slipped as he faced unrelenting criticism from the candidates and their allies.

Gingrich was expected to use clips from Romney's previous campaigns distancing himself from President Ronald Reagan and pitch Gingrich's economic plan as "Reaganomics 2.0." Gingrich also was expected to compare Romney's tax plan with his own.

Santorum, meanwhile, planned to announce support from another wave of Iowa conservatives. He scheduled a pheasant hunting trip in Adel for Monday afternoon. While he trails in polls and has not spent significant money on ads, Santorum is hoping his nonstop courtship of Iowans yields a late surge. He visited all 99 of Iowa's counties during the summer ? an accomplishment Bachmann has feverishly tried to replicate.

Bachmann, a congresswoman from Minnesota, last week darted through small towns, reminding voters that Santorum lost his 2006 re-election bid in a blowout and that Paul's foreign policy views were outside the party's orthodoxy. Looking to recapture voters' interest, her plan was to return to hand-to-hand campaigning on Tuesday.

Perry, too, was looking to keep up his message: his rivals are insiders unable to change Washington. He planned to return to his tour bus on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman kept his focus on New Hampshire. Early in the campaign, he said he would not compete in Iowa and instead make his start in New Hampshire, which comes second on the nominating calendar.

Satyajit Das on What Went Wrong With Finance ? naked capitalism

Mr. Das says banks lend money. That is misleading. Banks create money as they loan (?loans create deposits?). So much for banks being honest, they are not. Furthermore, the interest charged for those loans does not even exist in aggregate unless it is lent into existence too, leading to ever increasing private debt or if the interest comes from government deficit spending, ever increasing government debt (under the current system). So much for economic stability.

I see little difference between banks and drug pushers. The more one uses their ?product?, the more one has to use their product or crash.

Obesity Linked to Higher Esophageal Cancer Death Rates - iVillage

FRIDAY, Dec. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Obese people who have had surgery to treat esophageal cancer are twice as likely to have a recurrence of the disease or die from cancer within five years as patients of normal weight, according to a new study.

In the study, published in the Dec. 1 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., suggested their findings could change the way some doctors treat obese patients with this type of cancer.

The investigators followed 778 people who had surgery for esophageal cancer and found that those who were classified as obese (a body mass index of 30 or higher) had a five-year survival rate of 18 percent. That survival rate jumped to 36 percent among people who were not overweight.

"Obesity is considered a risk factor in the development of this cancer, which is known to be both highly lethal and increasingly common," the study's lead investigator, Dr. Harry Yoon, an oncologist at the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, said in a Mayo news release. "But prior to this study, we did not really understand the impact of obesity in this upper gastrointestinal cancer."

The study authors pointed out that their findings applied only to nonsmokers who had their esophagus removed. Yoon added that previous research has linked obesity to greater risk for cancer as well as increased risk of death from other types of tumors because extra weight results in a chronic inflammatory state.

The researchers noted their findings could change the approach they take with obese patients with esophageal cancer.

"As an oncologist, I did not typically speak to my patients about excess body weight as part of their care, because we are more often concerned about weight loss and maintaining proper nutrition, but that may change," said Yoon. "It would be helpful to be able to offer patients some measures that they can take to possibly impact their prognosis."

Amazon stops blocking rival e-reading apps on Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire
People just keep digging up interesting little tidbits in the latest Fire firware update. It may have killed the ability to root but, it did grant access to the Android Market website (even if you still can't install apps from it). Now some users have noticed that competing e-reader apps are available through the Amazon App Store. The rival readers were allowed into the shop, but hidden from view on the Fire. Now that's changed and Amazon's tablet, even with out Super User, is getting just a tiny bit more consumer-friendly.
